Little White Lies0
In this parenting article that has been on our sideblog for the last few days, they describe a study in which children play a game and then receive a disappointing prize, like a piece of soap, and then are asked how they like their prize. This is to gauge the children’s propensity for and skill in telling socially motivated (white) lies.
I found it interesting that they described, with what felt like to me disapproval, how parents seemed eager for their children to find a good lie and proud when they came up with a convincing one. The article was a little on the spare side, so it’s unclear if the writers would have us teach our children instead to tell the truth even when the truth is socially problematic. I don’t think I buy that.
Blossom my oldest is a pleaser by nature, like her father, she would have no trouble telling you that is the most wonderful bar of soap ever and she will treasure it and have the cleanest hands, thank you so very much for the wonderful prize. She wouldn’t mean a word of it.
