Turns out, Mormon women not the saddest0
It's not true that more LDS women are depressed than other women in America, said a BYU Education Week speaker Wednesday.
Marleen Williams, a BYU professor with a PhD in clinical psychology, said the folklore about Mormon women is based on a television documentary that relied on statistics gathered in Salt Lake City, which has a predominant LDS community.
She said the same documentary put forth the notion that Utahns are more depressed because there is a high use of Prozac in the state.
Prozac is a generic, relatively cheap drug prescribed for many causes, Williams said. So it isn't accurate to assume the drug is being prescribed only for depressed LDS females.
Williams said it actually may be that more Mormon men are depressed than Mormon women, but men tend to avoid seeking help when they are in distress.
