Thomas S. Monson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is celebrating his 83rd birthday Saturday, Aug. 21.

"President Thomas S. Monson will celebrate his 83rd birthday eating cake with his fellow church leaders. A private family celebration will be held in the evening," according to church spokesman Scott Trotter.

President Monson was born on Aug. 21, 1927, in Salt Lake City, to G. Spencer and Gladys Condie Monson. He was named as the 16th president of the church on Feb. 4, 2008, and was sustained to the position April 5 that same year.

President Monson was set apart as the first counselor to President Gordon B. Hinckley on March 12, 1995. He was also set apart as president of the Quorum of the Twelve on that date. He had previously served as second counselor to both President Howard W. Hunter, in 1994, and President Ezra Taft Benson, in 1985.
