Twelve days before the Rose Bowl, the Oregon Ducks got out of practice almost a half-hour early. It was a Sunday, and coach Chip Kelly knew that he had some players who would be going to church.
As the Ducks broke their final huddle, two players sprinted out ahead of the team toward the locker room.
Defensive end Will Tukuafu was first to fly out of the Ducks’ Moshofsky Center indoor practice facility. As Tukuafu ran, his long black hair flowed behind him, making him look like Pittsburgh Steelers star safety Troy Polamalu —if Troy Polamalu were 6-4 and had eaten filet mignon all year to weigh 262 pounds.
Defensive tackle Brandon Bair was close behind Tukuafu. Even the morning after a Saturday night, Bair looked like a clean-cut all-American giant, with his hair cropped short atop a 6-7, 268 pound frame.
Bair and Tukuafu had only a little time to shower, change clothes and get to their local Church of Latter-day Saints for a three-hour service.
