Service to others is essential to living a Christian life. Anytime, anyplace, we should be looking for opportunities to lift another and lighten someone’s burden. But when it’s a collective effort — where masses of people from a variety of religious, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds come together to serve, united in a common cause — it’s amazing. I saw this happen when we lived in Atlanta, and it was gratifying to see many Mormon Helping Hands reaching out to serve their communities with their neighbors.

This Sunday, on our May 20 edition of "Mormon Times TV," we’ll show you what happened when members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in California joined with others of other faiths in a massive volunteer effort. And, in conjunction with that project, recording artists Alex Boye and Carmen Rasmusen Herbert will be in the studio with their new duet, “Have I Done Any Good?” It's not quite what you’re used to when you sing it in church on Sundays.

When my husband and I were newly married, I taught a class of 16- to 18-year-old Laurel young women in my ward that stole my heart from the get-go. They became some of my dearest friends while we were together. We laughed at the crazy moments, cried over their disappointments and trials, and celebrated their achievements — together. When they were ready to graduate, they gave me a framed group picture of themselves — all dressed up — and it’s something I’ve cherished for over 20 years. The best part is those bonds and relationships continue to this day.

This Sunday on our special Mothers’ Day edition of "Mormon Times TV," you’ll see how the image of motherhood takes many forms. We’ll introduce you to a woman whose loving influence deeply affected a similar group of young women, now young mothers themselves.

On "The Daily Show" Wednesday night, comedian Jon Stewart went out of his way to defend both Mitt Romney and the LDS Church. Although he's not known as the greatest Romney fan, he took time to critique people from both sides who have essentially been Mormon-bashing.

He begins by calling out Pastor Robert Jeffress, who late last year called the LDS Church a "cult," but just a few weeks ago said he'd prefer a "Mormon like Mitt Romney" to a "Christian like Barack Obama." Stewart goes on to criticize others like MSNBC hosts Martin Bashir and Lawrence O'Donnell.

Stewart saves his harshest words for O'Donnell who claims Joseph Smith started the Church to cover up an affair, to which Stewart says just about any major religion could have been started for a number of scandalous/frivolous reasons, and to claim such a thing is ridiculous.

The video veers toward the irreverent side (watch at your own risk), but we think the fact that Jon Stewart went out of his way to defend the LDS Church is pretty cool.

As geneaology websites increase in popularity, like ancestry.com with its 14 million users, TV shows are catching on to the family history wave and becoming hits not only in the U.S. but around the globe.

“Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr.” is a popular new 10-part PBS program. The Washington Post highlighted an episode about Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a leading civil rights pioneer who found out that one of his ancestors had registered to vote shortly after the Civil War — a right Lewis had to fight for during his own lifetime. In 1965 he was beaten nearly to death by state troopers in Alabama during a voting rights protest march.

The death this past weekend of veteran television journalist Mike Wallace at the age of 93 has reminded many members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of the celebrated newsman's relationship with the late LDS Church President Gordon B. Hinckley.

In his foreword for President Hinckley's best-selling book, "Standing for Something," Wallace described how the interview happened.

When Dave Checketts heard that his friend and neighbor Mike Wallace was going to interview Gordon B. Hinckley, he was worried.

This was in 1995 and Wallace was famous for his tough interviewing skills on "60 Minutes." He didn't interview people, it was said; he interrogated them. It was also noted that the worst sentence you could hear in the English language was, "Mike Wallace is here to see you." He went one-on-one with hardened, tough politicians, crooks, business leaders and assorted battle-tested characters and turned them into oatmeal. And now he was about to interview the beloved president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on national TV.

Social networking is a great way to keep in touch with friends and family, but it’s also an incredible venue to share your religious beliefs.

When serving our LDS mission in Georgia, we asked missionaries and members to “post their profiles” on the LDS Church’s mormon.org website. Tens of thousands of Mormons all over the world are doing it — telling their personal stories of “Here’s how I believe” — because it’s a safe, comfortable missionary tool that needs members to help increase its reach.

I’ve had people tell me, “Oh, we wish we could watch your 'Mormon Times TV' show on Sunday mornings — but we’re in church.” Even though past episodes are always available online at mormontimestv.ksl.com, this is your chance! Since the morning session of general conference will fill our usual 10 a.m. time slot, we will air at 4 p.m. this coming Sunday, following the afternoon session. And, if I do say so myself, it’s a show packed with amazing content.

Sometimes we focus on work and career solely because we know we’ll get paid. After all, a job puts food on the table and helps us provide for our families. But it’s frequently looked at as something we have to do. What a bonus, though, if we love what we do and actually look forward to going to work every day. And if we really have a passion for our jobs — and helping others — we might even be willing to donate our time with no thought of monetary reward.

That’s the case with Dr. Scott McGavin, a local dentist and humanitarian who travels to India to help the leprosy-affected and their children. This Sunday, on the March 18 installment of "Mormon Times TV," you’ll get a firsthand look at the lives and faces he and his colleagues are changing, one smile at a time. It’s love of fellowman and true charity at their finest.

March is the month that we celebrate 170 years of Relief Society — the LDS Church's auxiliary for women — which is the largest women's organization in the world. Its purpose is to help members ages 18 and older increase faith and personal righteousness, strengthen families and homes and seek out and help those in need.

Anyone who's been a part of it knows Relief Society is a safe haven where love, service and sisterhood abound; where charity means much more than just delivering a meal or a loaf of bread — it's a way of life.

It’s so easy now to “reach out and touch someone.” Whether you blog or use Facebook or Twitter to share your mormon.org profile or "Mormon Messages," there are very up-to-date ways to express your personal beliefs.

I smile when I remember our family’s first attempt at sharing about 25 years ago, long before social networking sites were even invented. We took a family picture when our two oldest children were very young, then glued it inside the front flap of a blue copy of the Book of Mormon, along with a short declaration of our faith. We gave several to the missionaries to hand out (they always welcome extra copies), never knowing where they’d end up. Well, you just never know.
