José A. Moscão was noticing a trend: the youth who were coming to the Campinas Brazil Temple had a lot of “down time.”

Brother Moscão, the director of the family history center located adjacent to the Campinas Temple, knew that because of the distance many youth had to travel to get to the temple, most came in caravans and stayed for several days. The time between their sessions in the baptistry and meals and waiting for their parents and leaders who were participating in other temple ordinances couldn’t be avoided.

But maybe, he thought—or rather, he felt—he could offer the youth an alternative to wandering the temple grounds whenever they had some free time.

So he did.

The first known members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) in Brazil were two German families who immigrated to Brazil — one in 1913 and the other in 1923. During the decade that followed, others joined the Church, and the first congregation was organized in Joinville in 1930.

By the end of the 1950s, the number of Church members totaled 3,700. Today, more than 1.1 million Latter-day Saints live in Brazil.

The Punta Arenas Chile Stake is the southernmost stake of the Church in the world. Nicolás Reyes lives there.
Bishop David Oyarce of the Ovejero Ward called Nicolás to be the president of the deacons quorum not only because he was worthy but because he was the only active deacon in the whole ward. When he was set apart the bishop helped him understand his responsibility to go in search of those who were not active — which in this case were all of the other quorum members. Nicolás remembers that when he was set apart he felt a change within him; he felt that it was important that he be active because of his own testimony and not because of his parents or the testimony of others.

East of Quito, Ecuador, past the volcanoes and Andes Mountains, the terrain drops swiftly to the Amazon jungle. There you’ll find thick forests, abundant rivers, monkeys, toucans, and even pink dolphins.

You’ll also find a city called Puerto Francisco de Orellana. It’s a long ways from, well, everything else in Ecuador. Fifteen years ago, there were relatively few people in the area. But the discovery of petroleum brought industry, people seeking jobs, and members of the Church.

In years past, the center, run by the Fundación por Ayuda Humanitaria (Foundation for Humanitarian Aid—FAHUM), could accommodate as many as 300 children, but recent economic struggles and a reduction in donations necessitated cutbacks, allowing only 50 to attend.
