Thoughts: I wanted to start by helping the children know that we are given the Holy Ghost as a gift. But that often it take us a long time to learn how the Holy Ghost talks to us. And that it is ok if we don’t know when we feel it, but that it takes practice.

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will engage the children in a game that teaches them about baptism and the Holy Ghost.

Preparation: Create a poster of a path leading up to a gate by enlarging the sample below (or clicking here for a PDF), or drawing a simple version of your own. Create a game marker using a magnet or paper shape with tape on the back. Place the poster at the front of the room. Obtain and post pictures of Christ’s baptism, a child being baptized, and a child being confirmed.

Prepare strips of paper with the questions and songs listed below. Put the individual strips into a box or basket.

• What does someone being baptized wear? (white clothing)

• How old must someone be to be baptized? (at least eight years old)

• Sing “When I Am Baptized,” Children’s Songbook, 103.

• Who can perform a baptism? (a Priest in the Aaronic priesthood or someone who holds the Melchizedek priesthood)

• Before being baptized, a person needs to be interviewed by someone. Who? (bishop or branch president)

• What does immersion mean? (to be completely covered by water)

• Is baptism scary? (no, the person baptizing you will hold onto you the whole time)

• Who baptized Jesus? (John the Baptist)

• What is a covenant? (a promise between you and Heavenly Father)

• After we are baptized we are confirmed a member of the Church and given what gift? (the Holy Ghost)

• Sing “Baptism,” Children’s Songbook, 100.

• When do we renew our baptismal covenants? (when we take the Sacrament)

• The Holy Ghost is sometimes known by other names. Can you tell us one? (comforter, still, small voice, Spirit of God)

• Where are people baptized? (usually in a font of water in a church building, but sometimes in a river, lake, or pool)

Presentation: Show the children the poster. Explain that baptism is the gate to the strait and narrow path that leads to eternal life (see 2 Nephi 31). Tell them they are going to play a game and try to get the game piece through the gate.

Ask a child to come forward and choose a strip of paper from the basket. Read the question to them. They can get help from the rest of the Primary if they want. When they answer the question, they can move the marker up one step on the path. Clarify the concept, if needed. If the paper has a song on it, have the child help lead the song then move the marker up. Repeat with additional children until the marker reaches the top of the path.

Testify that you know the children are choosing the right when they get baptized. Jesus gave them the example of what to do and Heavenly Father is very happy when they take this important step.

Thoughts: This week I wanted to focus on how Jesus Christ treated the less desirable people of his time, or the “sinner” of His day. I want to teach the children that we are not to look down upon those who are “different from themselves, but to become like Jesus and to truly love others as God loves them.

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will engage the children in an activity to help them learn about Jesus Christ’s life and teachings.

Preparation: Obtain a number of pictures of events during Jesus’ life. Post these around the Primary room. Gather crayons, markers, and/or pencils and a sheet of paper for each child.

Presentation: Give each child paper and crayons and have them create a picture of an event from Jesus’ life. Point out the pictures of Jesus posted around the room. If needed, have their teachers help explain the posted pictures to the children, as they work. Give the children a set amount of time to work on their picture.

Ask a number of children to show their pictures and briefly tell the story the pictures depict. After each picture, discuss what Jesus did. Ask the children what they can learn from that story and how they can be more like Jesus.

Bear your testimony of Jesus Christ. Sing songs about Jesus Christ, such as:

“When Jesus Christ Was Baptized” (Children’s Songbook, p. 102)

“Jesus Loved the Little Children” (Children’s Songbook, p. 59)

“Jesus Once Was a Little Child” (Children’s Songbook, p. 55)

“He Sent His Son” (Children’s Songbook, p. 34)

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will help the children learn about the messages latter-day
prophets have for them.

Preparation:

Make the following signs:

GO on a circle

GUIDE
 on an arrow shape

SAFETY on a rectangle

LOOK on a diamond shape

LEARN on a triangle shape

GOOD FRIENDS on a heart shape

Obtain pictures of President Thomas S. Monson, President Henry B. Eyring, and President Dieter F. Uchtdorf. Obtain a copy of the Friend magazines mentioned below.

If you have room in your Primary, post the signs around the room (with “GO” at the front) so the
children can walk to each one as you discuss it. It there isn’t enough space to move
around the room, post them on the front board and have the children walk in
place between reading and discussing each one.

Presentation: Show the pictures of the members of the First Presidency
and explain to the children that we have a living prophet and his two counselors
to help us know what is right. Every year during conference they talk to us.
Every month in the Friend magazine some of their words are written down just for
children! Show them pages 2 and 3 of the January 2012 Friend. Explain
that this is a message just for them from President Thomas S. Monson.

GO. Point to the GO sign and briefly retell the story of President Monson trying to find the house of Brother Salas. Tell them that they are going to pretend to go on an errand, just like President Monson did. To help them know where to go and what to do, they need to look for the signs. As you come to each sign, discuss whom the message is from and what they have to teach us.

GUIDE. In the February 2012 Friend, President Henry B. Eyring tells us “The Book of Mormon is our sure guide on the way home to God.” And that “Each time I read even a few lines in the Book of Mormon, I feel my testimony strengthened.” Discuss how the Book of Mormon can be a guide. Sing “Book of Mormon Stories,” (Children’s Songbook, page 118).

SAFETY. In the October 2011 Friend, President Thomas S. Monson teaches us about the Jaredites in the Book of Mormon who safely crossed the sea. They left a wicked place and came to the Promised Land. President Monson said, “If we heed [the Lord’s] words and live the commandments, we will survive this time of wickedness—a time which can be compared with the waves and the winds and the floods.” Discuss how keeping the commandments will help keep us safe.

LOOK. In the December 2011 Friend, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf tells the story of a grandfather and his four-year-old granddaughter. The girl noticed the shiny “stars” on the ceiling that her grandfather had never noticed before. President Uchtdorf tells us “the glitter of the [Christmas] season should never dim our sight and prevent us from seeing the Prince of Peace in His majesty.” Ask the children if they ever think of the Savior and remember him when they see stars in the sky, or leaves, or flowers, or any of His other beautiful creations. Challenge them to always “look” for evidence of the Savior in the world around them.

FRIENDS. In the November 2011 Friend, President Henry B. Eyring tells us that we become the Savior’s friends as we serve others for Him. He says, “You have many opportunities to be a friend for Him. It may be as you walk on a dusty road. It may be as you look for a place to sit at church. . . . Living prophets of God have asked us to be faithful friends to those who come into the Church as converts and to go to the rescue of those who have drifted away.” Sing, “I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus,” (Children’s Songbook, page 78) or “We Are Different,” (CS, page 263).

LEARN. In the September 2011 Friend, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf tells of an experience he had when he saw two desks in a classmate’s home. He loved to learn and wanted to be able to sit at a desk and study. He said, “For members of the Church, education is not merely a good idea—it’s a commandment. We are to learn of things both in heaven and in the earth.” And “strive to increase your knowledge.” Discuss ways and places the children can learn.

Have the children return to their seats. Bear testimony that through the words of these wonderful men we are hearing the word of the Lord for us. Read D&C 1:38: “What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, . . . whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.”

Thoughts while preparing this lesson. The last few weeks I have been studying President David O. McKay’s teachings on agency. I have thought and reflected on this years theme “Choose the Right” and how important it is to teach our children to use their agency well. And I have decided that for my lessons this month and for the rest of the year I will try to focus on how to teach children to see how they can become good agents for themselves and how they can learn how to act and not to be simply acted upon.

2. That's some pretty awesome photography... not.
3. You should add a hot guy in the picture with the caption, "Hey girl... these plate rings make me want to choose the right."

In an area training last year, Sister Jean Stevens counseled primary leaders in that region to focus on the plan of salvation. Cheryl’s ward did a 5th Sunday about the plan of salvation and put these large visual aids on the wall in their primary room, and now refer to them during most other sharing time lessons. They based their lesson on a simplified version the Plan of Salvation lesson from Preach my Gospel (leaving out references to paradise/spirit prison and judgment). My sister recently taught a similar lesson in her ward.

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will help the children learn about the blessings they receive when they choose the right.

Preparation: Obtain a bean bag and two buckets or baskets. Label one bucket, “YES” and the other bucket, “NO.”

Presentation: Explain to the children that commandments are the rules or laws that Heavenly Father wants us to live by. We find the commandments in the scriptures, or by listening to the prophet. We show our love for Jesus Christ by obeying the commandments. When we obey the commandments the Lord gives us many blessings.

Display the yes and no buckets. Give a child the bean bag. Read one of the situations below. Have the child toss the bean bag into the “YES” bucket if the example is one of choosing the right and into the “NO” bucket if they did not choose the right. Review and discuss the situation as needed, reminding the children what blessings they might receive when they choose the right.

Hand the bean bag to another child and read the next situation.

• Michael eats fruit and vegetables and other healthy foods.

• Peter helps his mother clear the table even when she doesn’t ask him to.

• Maria argues about going to bed.

• Rosa loves to read the scriptures with her mother and father each night.

• Henry listens to the Sacrament prayers and thinks about Jesus when he takes the bread and water.

• Adam wants to play a video game that has bad pictures and uses bad words.

• Pilar invites the new girl to play with her during recess.

• Everett complains that church is always boring.

• Micah likes to learn the songs and sing in Primary.

• Ricardo plays on the swing set when his father asks him to help rake the leaves.

• Lucia chose not to wear a shirt that didn’t cover her body very well.

• Max’s friends find a cigarette while walking home from school. Mormon Life says: This sharing time will involve the children in an activity to help them understand agency and the effects of our choices.

Preparation: Obtain a map that shows major cities and roads.

Presentation: Explain that agency is a gift from Heavenly Father. Agency means that we have the freedom to choose what we will do, but there are always consequences that come with our choices. A consequence is what happens because of our choice.

Show the map. Point out a starting place and an ending place on the map. Decide which road is the best one to take to get from the start to the finish. Point out a different road (that does not go to the ending place). Ask the children if taking that road helps them get where they want to go. Repeat this process with another beginning and ending location. Help the children understand that they have the freedom to take any road, but some of them won’t get them where they want to end up. These are like choices, they all have consequences, and they may or may not reach their goal depending on the choice they make.

Talk about some of the choices they might make that may or may not help them reach their goals. As you discuss each choice demonstrate the consequences by pointing to the road that reaches the goal and the one that doesn’t. Some examples may be:

1. You want to learn how to play the piano, but when it is time to practice you would rather play with your friends. Which choice will help you get to your goal?

2. You want to be worthy to attend the temple when you are older. Someone wants you to try drugs or drink alcohol, saying that using them will make you feel good. Which choice will help you get to your goal?

3. You promised your parents that you will try to get good grades. You also want to obey the commandments. During a test you are tempted to look at your neighbor’s paper for an answer. Which choice will help you get to your goals?

4. At tithing settlement you promised the bishop that you will always pay a full tithing. You earned some money to buy a new toy. When you got to the store, the toy costs more than you thought. You could add your tithing money to what you have saved so that you will have enough to buy the toy. Which choice will help you get to your goal?

5. You set a goal to remember to say your prayers every night for three months. One night you’re very tired and get into bed before remembering to pray. Which choice will help you get to your goal?

Sing songs to help reinforce the lesson, such as: “As a Child of God,” 2012 Outline for Sharing Time; “Choose the Right Way,” Children’s Songbook, p. 160; “Dare to Do Right,” CS, 158; “I’m Trying to Be Like Jesus,” CS, 78; and “I Will Follow God’s Plan,” CS, 164.

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will teach the children about Christ’s birth and Second Coming.

Preparation: Print the scriptures or song titles below on individual sheets of yellow or gold cardstock. Cut each cardstock into a large star shape, so the scripture is in the middle of the star. Obtain a picture of Christ’s birth and a picture of His second coming. Post the two pictures on opposite sides of the board and draw a vertical line down the middle of the board between the two pictures. Place the stars facedown on a table at the front of the room. Obtain tape or magnets to attach the stars to the board during the presentation.

Alma 7:10. And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, . . . [shall] bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God.

2 Nephi 25:19. For according to the words of the prophets, the Messiah cometh in six hundred years from the time that my father left Jerusalem; and according to the words of the prophets, and also the word of the angel of God, his name shall be Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Isaiah 9:6. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Matthew 2:1. Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem.

Luke 2:10-11. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Luke 21:27. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Matthew 16:27. For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

1 Thessalonians 4:16. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.

Doctrine and Covenants 41:4. And I will be your ruler when I come; and behold, I come quickly, and ye shall see that my law is kept.

Doctrine and Covenants 133:25. And the Lord, even the Savior, shall stand in the midst of his people, and shall reign over all flesh.

"Away in a Manger." Children’s Songbook, 42

"When He Comes Again." Children’s Songbook, 82

"He Sent His Son." Children’s Songbook, 34

Presentation: Tell the children that there are many scriptures about Jesus Christ. Today they are going to read some that tell about when he was born and some about when he will return to the earth. Explain that we refer to the time when he will return to earth as the second coming. Tell them that they will have to listen carefully, because they will have to tell if the scripture talks about his birth (the first coming) or about his return (the second coming).

Explain that we often use stars for decorations, because of the new star that appeared when Christ was born. Ask a child to come forward and select a star. Have the child read the scripture aloud to the group (younger children can repeat the scripture after you). The group then decides if the scripture is about Christ’s birth or second coming. The child puts the star on the correct side of the board. If the star has a song title on it, have all the children sing the song and then decide which side of the board the star goes on. Repeat with other children and the remaining stars.

Point to the board that is now covered with stars and explain that the scriptures contain many more testimonies of Jesus Christ. Bear your testimony of the Savior.

For singing time you may want to sing other songs that teach about Jesus’ birth or second coming, such as: "Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus," (Children’s Songbook, 36); "Stars Were Gleaming," (CS, 37); "Once within a Lowly Stable," (CS, 41); and "Had I Been a Child,” (3rd verse, CS, 80).
Mormon Life says: More ideas for your November Sharing Time. (Check out LDS Living's November Sharing Time Lesson Help here.)

Monthly Theme: Reverence Is Love and Respect for God.
Monthly Scripture: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37).

Week 1 Reverence is love and respect for God.

* Make a giant Venn diagram (2 circles overlapping in the middle) On one side brainstorm all the different ways to show love and on the other side ways to show respect. Ideas that are the same for both go in the middle!

* Million Dollar Question Minus the Million Dollars.... When was the only time we see Jesus get really upset in the scriptures? When people weren't showing REVERENCE for His Father's house, the temple! Have 6 children come to the front. Ask the children questions having to do with the story, when they answer correctly hand them a fake million dollar bill. BUT... is money everything? What do we learn from the story?!?! Let them crumple up their bill and try to toss it in the garbage can naming a blessing that comes from being reverent. (E.g. Peace, Happiness, Eternal Life, Holy Ghost will be close...)

Mormon Life says: Teaching reverence to Primary children can be difficult, but this month's sharing time will help involve them in an activity that will help them understand the concept.

This sharing time will involve the children in an activity to help them understand reverence.

Preparation: Make a poster of Matthew 22:37: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” Post it at the front of the room.

Presentation: Ask the children if they know what reverence means. Briefly discuss it, helping them to understand that reverence is more that just being quiet. Tell them that reverence is something you feel as well as do. Have the children read the scripture from Matthew together. Explain that reverence is one way of feeling and showing love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Tell them you are going to try an experiment. Ask them sit quietly and do everything you tell them (make sure you speak with a very calm voice).

Tell them to close their eyes and imagine themselves in the following scenario: “You are walking down a path in a meadow. The meadow is filled with beautiful flowers. Birds are singing. The sky is blue and the sun is warm. You feel quiet and happy. As you walk, you realize that someone is approaching you from far down the path. You walk toward each other for a while. Now you can see him clearly. You stop as you realize it is the Savior.

“He continues to walk steadily toward you. As he nears, you fall to your knees. He stops before you, reaches down to take your hand, and lifts you to your feet. Then he embraces you. As his arms fold around you, you feel his spirit wash over your entire body. He steps back, and as you look into his eyes you see his gentle love and concern for you. You stay there for a moment just looking into his eyes. Then, slowly, you turn and go back the way you have come. You walk back through the meadow and into your seats in this room. Now, open your eyes.” (See Joan B. MacDonald, Holiness of Everyday Life, [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1995].)

Tell them that some of the words to one of our sacrament hymns says "Jesus, the very thought of thee, with sweetness fills my breast." Help them understand that “sweetness” is the love we feel for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Explain that they can take this imaginary walk with Jesus during the sacrament quiet time or whenever they desire.

If time allows, let the children quietly color a picture of the meadow they imagined. Bear your testimony of your love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Sing songs that will reinforce reverence, such as "Reverently, Quietly,” Children’s Songbook, p. 26; “I Will Try to Be Reverent,” Children’s Songbook, p. 28; “Reverence is Love,” Children’s Songbook, p. 31; and “This Is God’s House,” Children’s Songbook, p. 30.

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will involve the children as they learn more about prayer.

Preparation:
Gather a number of communication visual aids (some may need to be photographs) such as a letter or postcard, a walkie-talkie, an old telephone with a cord, a radio, a computer, a cell phone, a picture of telegraph, etc. Place them on a table and board at the front of the room. Write the scripture references below on six strips of paper. Have blank papers and crayons or markers available.

Presentation:
Show the children the display of items/pictures at the front of the room. Tell them that all of these things can be used for the same thing. Have the children guess what that is. Let them guess until they figure out that all of them can be used to get messages from one person to another.

Explain to the children that there is someone you can communicate with, without using any of these items. That person is Heavenly Father. You can talk to him whenever you need to, just by saying a prayer.

Tell the children they are going to help each other learn more about prayer. Divide the children into six groups. Make sure a teacher or other leader is in each group. Give each group one of the scripture references. Let them take a few minutes to read the scripture and create a simple drawing that shows what that scripture teaches us about prayer (who, when, or where).

Let each group present their picture and explain their scripture.

3 Nephi 18:21. Pray in your families unto the Father, always in my name, that your wives and your children may be blessed.

Matthew 6:6. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

1 Nephi 16:32. Now when they beheld that I had obtained food, how great was their joy! And it came to pass that they did humble themselves before the Lord, and did give thanks unto him.

Psalms 55:16-17. As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.

Matthew 21:13. And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer.

Alma 34:19-20. Yea, humble yourselves, and continue in prayer unto him. Cry unto him when ye are in your fields, yea, over all your flocks.

After all the groups have presented their scripture and drawing, reinforce the messages taught and bear your testimony of prayer.
Mormon Life says: This sharing time will engage the children in a game to help them want to be missionaries.

Preparation: Obtain seven or eight small objects from other countries (if necessary, borrow some from other people so you get a wide variety of countries represented). Get a world map or globe. Make a poster with the scripture “This gospel will be preached unto every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people” (D&C 133:37).

Presentation: Show the poster to the children and have everyone read it aloud together. Ask them what the words nation, kindred, tongue, and people mean. Help them understand that this means people living in different parts of the world, speaking many different languages, and having many different cultures.

Tell the children that the Lord needs missionaries for the gospel to be preached to the whole world. The missionaries need to “seek out” or find those who want to know the truth. Explain that they are going to play a game of hide and seek.

Show the children one of the objects from another country. Briefly explain what it is and show them on the map which country it comes from. Ask one child to leave the room. Ask another child to hide the object somewhere in the room. Have the first child return and look for the object. Have the other children sing “Called to Serve” (Children’s Songbook, p. 174) as he looks. Sing louder when he gets closer and softer when he gets farther away until he finds the object.

Repeat with other objects as time permits, singing other missionary songs or songs you want the children to review. Possible songs could be “I Hope They Call Me on a Mission” (Children’s Songbook, p. 169), “We’ll Bring the World His Truth” (CS p. 172), and “I Want to Be a Missionary Now” (CS, p. 168).

Conclude by showing the children the map and pointing out where you live. Explain that there are people here that need to learn about the gospel as well.

Help them know that they can be missionaries now by seeking out people to share the gospel with. They can also prepare to be full-time missionaries in the future. Bear your testimony of missionary work. Tell the children how it has blessed you and your family.

Mormon Life says: A week-by-week Sharing Time guide for this month's theme, "My Body Is a Temple."

Monthly Theme: My body is a temple of God.

Monthly Scripture: "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? ...The temple of God is holy, which temple ye are” 1 Corinthians 3:16–17

Week 1 My body is a temple.

* Personal reading for you about this week's theme... yes you. I'm talking to you. Not your dad. Read "Ye Are the Temple of God," by Elder Bednar. See. Aren't you glad you read that?

* Pres. Boyd K. Packer (I heart Boyd) says, “Our physical body is the instrument of our spirit” (Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled [1991], 211). Bring in a variety of different instruments. Divide into groups and let the children come up with a song or a chant. You can give groups topics like, "How do I treat my body like a temple." or "I love my body because...." or "Bodies are like temples because...." Let them play instruments during their songs.
