Driving south on Provo's University Avenue on a clear Saturday morning, orange balloons dot the sky.

The closer one comes to their source, a house on Lambert Lane, more come into view. A handful of neighbors fill the balloons, tie them to strings at least 160 feet long and place them in their cars for distribution.

"They're just a reminder that there is a building that is proposed," said organizer R. Paul Evans. "(We're) trying to get a dialogue with the people who make decisions, to meet their needs as well as the flavor of this neighborhood."

Pleasant View neighborhood residents weren’t satisfied after a presentation on plans for a nine-story building at the LDS Missionary Training Center.

I live about two blocks from the Provo Tabernacle. I can see it from my house. I could also see it that fateful day in December 2010 when a devastating fire destroyed all but the exterior walls of the building.

On Saturday, Elder Jeffrey R. Holland broke ground for those soot-stained walls to become hallowed ground as the Provo City Center Temple.

As I have passed the site recently, I have thought of what an example the building is to us.

Out of the ashes of a beloved tabernacle, the Church will build the Provo City Center Temple, said Elder Jeffrey R. Holland on May 12.
Presiding at the groundbreaking of Provo's second temple, Elder Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve dedicated "already sacred ground for an even more sacred purpose."

A devastating fire gutted the historic Provo Tabernacle in December of 2010. Originally constructed between 1883 and 1898, the building was a community gathering place for meetings and cultural events in Provo.

The city will begin negotiating with the LDS Church over the price of a half-acre of asphalt south of the burned-out Provo Tabernacle.

The Municipal Council unanimously voted Tuesday night to declare as surplus property a .447-acre slice of 100 South, from University Avenue to the west end of the tabernacle property. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has asked to buy the property as part of its plans to convert the tabernacle’s ruins into the Provo City Center Temple.

The work is completed. Excavation of the original Provo Tabernacle at the site of the new Provo City Center Temple has been finished. A team of BYU archaeologists in conjunction with the Church History and Temple Departments have been hard at work since the beginning of the year. They have uncovered the foundation of the original Provo Tabernacle dedicated in 1867, a water well and many pioneer artifacts.

"The building was integral to the pioneer origins and early history of Utah County," said Rich Talbot, director of the Office of Public Archaeology (OPA) at BYU.

In the heart of Provo, Utah, USA, workers in orange hard hats step around steel supports and twisted metal as they clear debris from around four charred walls.

Those walls are all that physically remain of the historic Provo Tabernacle—a 114-year-old symbol of the city’s pioneer heritage—following a four-alarm fire that ravaged the building in the early morning hours of December 17, 2010. Today the tabernacle is undergoing a transformation as workers strengthen its foundation and convert it to something with an even more exalted purpose—the Provo City Center Temple.

It is only the fourth temple to be created by converting an existing building. Others include the Copenhagen Denmark Temple, the Manhattan New York Temple, and the Vernal Utah Temple.

The Provo Tabernacle was one of the first landmarks Lindsay Johansson fell in love with when she came to Brigham Young University as a student.

On Friday she worked in an archaeological dig in the shadow of the tabernacle and reflected on how a tragedy became an opportunity for her, other students and ultimately, for the city of Provo, which has unearthed a significant piece of its history.

The tragedy was the fire that gutted the tabernacle in December 2010. A redemptive high came six months ago when LDS Church President Thomas S. Monson announced to the church in its October general conference that the burned-out shell would be rebuilt as a temple.
