In an area training last year, Sister Jean Stevens counseled primary leaders in that region to focus on the plan of salvation. Cheryl’s ward did a 5th Sunday about the plan of salvation and put these large visual aids on the wall in their primary room, and now refer to them during most other sharing time lessons. They based their lesson on a simplified version the Plan of Salvation lesson from Preach my Gospel (leaving out references to paradise/spirit prison and judgment). My sister recently taught a similar lesson in her ward.

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will help the children learn about the blessings they receive when they choose the right.

Preparation: Obtain a bean bag and two buckets or baskets. Label one bucket, “YES” and the other bucket, “NO.”

Presentation: Explain to the children that commandments are the rules or laws that Heavenly Father wants us to live by. We find the commandments in the scriptures, or by listening to the prophet. We show our love for Jesus Christ by obeying the commandments. When we obey the commandments the Lord gives us many blessings.

Display the yes and no buckets. Give a child the bean bag. Read one of the situations below. Have the child toss the bean bag into the “YES” bucket if the example is one of choosing the right and into the “NO” bucket if they did not choose the right. Review and discuss the situation as needed, reminding the children what blessings they might receive when they choose the right.

Hand the bean bag to another child and read the next situation.

• Michael eats fruit and vegetables and other healthy foods.

• Peter helps his mother clear the table even when she doesn’t ask him to.

• Maria argues about going to bed.

• Rosa loves to read the scriptures with her mother and father each night.

• Henry listens to the Sacrament prayers and thinks about Jesus when he takes the bread and water.

• Adam wants to play a video game that has bad pictures and uses bad words.

• Pilar invites the new girl to play with her during recess.

• Everett complains that church is always boring.

• Micah likes to learn the songs and sing in Primary.

• Ricardo plays on the swing set when his father asks him to help rake the leaves.

• Lucia chose not to wear a shirt that didn’t cover her body very well.

• Max’s friends find a cigarette while walking home from school. They decide to try it.

• Kimlee chose to play in a soccer tournament on Sunday.

• Amilyn eats more cookies, candy, and soda than good food.

• Kiki’s little sister broke Kiki’s toy, but Kiki forgave her.

• Jonah sees a toy he likes at the store and puts it in his pocket.

• Julia decided not to play with children who were saying bad words.

• Fernando likes to go to Primary to learn about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Testify that you know the children will receive blessings if they obey the commandments.

Sing songs to reinforce the concept, such as “Keep the Commandments,” Children’s Songbook, p. 146; “Nephi’s Courage,” CS, p. 120; “Choose the Right Way,” CS, p. 160; and “Choose the Right.” Hymns, no. 239.

The theme for the 2012 Outline for Sharing Time — "Choose the Right" — will help Latter-day Saint children learn that agency, or the ability to make choices, is part of Heavenly Father's plan, said Sister Rosemary M. Wixom, Primary general president.
"Agency was a part of our life before this existence and it is part of our life now, and it is by choosing the right that will help us stay on the path to our Heavenly Father," she said.

Mormon Life says: Children with disabilities can be found in every Primary. How can we meet the needs of all the children in our ranks? Here are a few resources, with insight from those with experience, for members looking to help.

Sundays at the Staples’ home were anything but restful. As soon as 6-year-old Jon realized it was Sunday, the crying, tantrums, and pleading started. During Sacrament Meeting, Jon, who was recently diagnosed with a developmental disability, fidgeted and squirmed. At Primary, he rocked back and forth, swung his feet, poked his friends, or got up and walked around. Occasionally, he became so frustrated that he had meltdowns or lashed out at friends and teachers. The Primary leaders and teachers were patient and loving, but they wondered how to help Jon while still meeting the needs of the other children in their large Primary. Heather Staples, Jon’s mom, recalls, “By Sunday night, we were exhausted and discouraged.”

Most LDS parents have experienced some of these feelings after a long day of trying to help children be reverent at church. Sundays are particularly challenging, though, for parents of a child who has a developmental disability. For children like Jon, Sunday is often the most difficult day of the week.

Many children with developmental disabilities have difficulty sitting still for more than a few minutes. Primary lessons may lack the visual cues or stimulation needed to keep a child who has autism or attention deficit disorder engaged. Small, overcrowded classrooms are often overwhelming to a child with a sensory processing disorder. Primary teachers and leaders may lack the necessary knowledge and skills to deal effectively with these children.

Yet, meeting the needs of all children must be the first goal of any Primary. Seek for understanding first, and then actively look for solutions. Consult parents, priesthood leaders and church disability resources for information and support.

Observe the Child

Become aware of all the children in your Primary. On average, between 12 and 17 percent of the children in a ward Primary may have some type of disability, according to lds.org. Disabilities that display physical symptoms, such as Down’s syndrome or cerebral palsy, are fairly obvious, but identifying and meeting the needs of children with developmental disabilities is more difficult. These children are often labeled as “naughty” or “difficult” and may not receive the help they need.

Objectively observe a child who is struggling. Take note of the child’s preferences, as well as situations that seem to trigger challenging behaviors. Try to see the world through the child’s eyes and gain an understanding of what motivates behavior.

For example, a child with a learning disability may be disruptive in an effort to hide the fact that he can’t read. A child with a sensory processing disorder may seem withdrawn, or, conversely, may continually touch his friends as a way to master his environment.

Communicate with Parents

Schedule a time to talk privately with the parents. Express your love for the child and your desire for the child to be happy and successful in Primary. Describe the behaviors you have observed, and ask for the parents’ input in finding effective solutions.

Leaders often feel nervous about approaching a parent or worry that they will offend the parent. Parents may initially respond with defensiveness but will appreciate your sincere expressions of love and a desire to help. Many children with developmental disabilities and behavioral disorders aren’t diagnosed until age five or older; Parents may be struggling to find information and help, just as you are. Together, though, and with the inspiration of the Lord, you can implement changes that will benefit the child.

Heather Staples met with her ward Primary president to uncover possible reasons why Jon was so unhappy in Primary. As the Primary presidency spent more time observing Jon, they noticed that he had no friends. The Primary president said, “We can start by fixing that.”

Jon’s primary teacher made a concerted effort to develop a relationship with him and help him form friendships with the other children. Although Jon still finds Primary challenging, he no longer dreads Sundays.

Strengthen Relationships

All children respond positively when they feel loved and accepted. Seek to develop genuine love and appreciation for each child in the Primary. A child with a behavioral disorder or developmental disability may not always be able to control his behavior. However, when she feels loved, she is more motivated to try. A child who feels disapproval or disdain from others will likely become discouraged and give up.

Visit the child at her home or invite her to your house with a classmate to make cookies or play a game. Help her develop strategies to relate to the other children.

Make a Plan

In partnership with the child’s parents, develop a plan based on the child’s strengths and needs. Think creatively and be willing to make adaptations to the schedule and lessons. For example, if a child has trouble sitting through sharing time, allow him to come a few minutes late. Go for a walk or provide some physical outlet. If a child seems overwhelmed by the noise of a large group, allow him to wear headphones.

Experienced teachers know that a productive, effective lesson time is the result of careful planning. The following strategies can help not only children with special needs, but all Primary children, participate more successfully.

Look for opportunities to utilize the child’s strengths. A child with a learning disability may not want to read aloud, but he may have a vivid imagination and love acting out stories. Shawna Hodges, whose son Grady has Down’s Syndrome, stresses the importance of making small efforts to help each child feel included. She says, “Children with special needs or disabilities have feelings like we all do. They want to be involved. Allowing them to hold a photo or pass something out or answer a question will build their self-esteem and help them to really know that they are a part of the group.”

Maintain a predictable schedule, and give advance warning of schedule changes. Many children with special needs have difficulty with transitions. A predictable schedule helps them feel safe and secure.

Prepare the classroom ahead of time. Put away extra chairs and keep the classroom uncluttered, since a cluttered space can be over stimulating. Bring small posters or pictures to make the classroom more inviting.

Use visuals, music and actions to engage children and keep their interest. Use the most active, hands-on method possible to teach a concept. For example, rather than just retelling a scripture story, bring pictures, props, or best of all, act the story out.

Provide variety. Although some repetition can help children master concepts, children become bored when the same game, song, or activity is repeated over and over. Plan for a new activity every 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the ages and needs of the children.

Making adaptations for a child with a developmental disability may seem like a lot of effort, but leaders and teachers who take on this challenge are richly rewarded. Primary leaders who effectively meet the needs of their most vulnerable children gain a greater understanding of Christ-like love, develop an increased capacity for empathy, and deepen their ability to effectively teach. Children with developmental disabilities often have unique and interesting perceptions of the world and can contribute in many ways to Primary.

Visit lds.org/disability for more information.

As a note, these are ideas once you've learned the basic song. You'll need some sort of visual to teach the words to the children... these are in addition to that visual.

* Power to Choose Stick- Make a little wooden stick the primary's power to choose stick. While singing the song a primary friend can hold the stick up front as long as they like, within reason, and then they can point it to another primary friend- they have the power to choose! That friend then comes to the front and you keep on pointing, choosing and singing. Remember, the person up front has to sing too!

Monthly Theme: Agency Is the Gift to Choose for Ourselves

Monthly Scripture: "Wherefore, men are free . . . to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men" (2 Nephi 2:27).

Week 1 and 2: Agency is the gift to choose for ourselves.

* God bless whoever invented ice cream! Who has ever enjoyed going into an ice cream shop and having a bunch of flavors to choose from? What are some favorites? Personally, it's Rocky Road or bust for me! Have an ice cream cone and different colored ice cream scoops made out of paper. Write scriptures, questions and songs having to do with agency on the back of the scoops. Invite a child to choose a scoop, then do what it says on back and build a tall cone on the black board! There are a lot of choices out there and it's God's gift of agency to us, to let us choose!!!

Few childhood memories are as vivid as the memory of gathering at my Grandma and Grandpa Cannon's home on Christmas Eve. Reflecting on that memory is like rereading a good book. Through a child's eyes, each life event is magnified. Nothing is mundane. That's why the Christmas Eve tradition at Grandma and Grandpa's was magnificent!

Cut each cardstock into a large star shape, so the scripture is in the middle of the star. Obtain a picture of Christ’s birth and a picture of His second coming. Post the two pictures on opposite sides of the board and draw a vertical line down the middle of the board between the two pictures. Place the stars facedown on a table at the front of the room. Obtain tape or magnets to attach the stars to the board during the presentation.

Alma 7:10. And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, . . . [shall] bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God.

2 Nephi 25:19. For according to the words of the prophets, the Messiah cometh in six hundred years from the time that my father left Jerusalem; and according to the words of the prophets, and also the word of the angel of God, his name shall be Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

Isaiah 9:6. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Matthew 2:1. Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judæa in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem.

Luke 2:10-11. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Luke 21:27. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

Matthew 16:27. For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

1 Thessalonians 4:16. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first.

Doctrine and Covenants 41:4. And I will be your ruler when I come; and behold, I come quickly, and ye shall see that my law is kept.

Doctrine and Covenants 133:25. And the Lord, even the Savior, shall stand in the midst of his people, and shall reign over all flesh.

"Away in a Manger." Children’s Songbook, 42

"When He Comes Again." Children’s Songbook, 82

"He Sent His Son." Children’s Songbook, 34

Presentation: Tell the children that there are many scriptures about Jesus Christ. Today they are going to read some that tell about when he was born and some about when he will return to the earth. Explain that we refer to the time when he will return to earth as the second coming. Tell them that they will have to listen carefully, because they will have to tell if the scripture talks about his birth (the first coming) or about his return (the second coming).

Explain that we often use stars for decorations, because of the new star that appeared when Christ was born. Ask a child to come forward and select a star. Have the child read the scripture aloud to the group (younger children can repeat the scripture after you). The group then decides if the scripture is about Christ’s birth or second coming. The child puts the star on the correct side of the board. If the star has a song title on it, have all the children sing the song and then decide which side of the board the star goes on. Repeat with other children and the remaining stars.

Point to the board that is now covered with stars and explain that the scriptures contain many more testimonies of Jesus Christ. Bear your testimony of the Savior.

For singing time you may want to sing other songs that teach about Jesus’ birth or second coming, such as: "Samuel Tells of the Baby Jesus," (Children’s Songbook, 36); "Stars Were Gleaming," (CS, 37); "Once within a Lowly Stable," (CS, 41); and "Had I Been a Child,” (3rd verse, CS, 80).
My calling at church is teaching the 5year olds. There are only four of them in my class, so needless to say, it is a comic routine in the making. They tell me things I'm rather certain their parents don't want anyone to know and they would be horrified if they heard repeated.

I'm not telling anyone. Pinky Swear.

I am, however, going to tell you what I learned about myself during Primary Singing Time at Church last week:

Primary children all over the world have missionary opportunities to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They can share their testimonies and what they learn each week in Primary with other children, who are not members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The following is a true story about Paul Larson, who at the age of 9, first learned about the Church and Primary from a young neighbor.

This is where Paul Larson's conversion story began:

Mormon Life says: More ideas for your November Sharing Time. (Check out LDS Living's November Sharing Time Lesson Help here.)

Monthly Theme: Reverence Is Love and Respect for God.
Monthly Scripture: "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind” (Matthew 22:37).

Week 1 Reverence is love and respect for God.

* Make a giant Venn diagram (2 circles overlapping in the middle) On one side brainstorm all the different ways to show love and on the other side ways to show respect. Ideas that are the same for both go in the middle!

* Million Dollar Question Minus the Million Dollars.... When was the only time we see Jesus get really upset in the scriptures? When people weren't showing REVERENCE for His Father's house, the temple! Have 6 children come to the front. Ask the children questions having to do with the story, when they answer correctly hand them a fake million dollar bill. BUT... is money everything? What do we learn from the story?!?! Let them crumple up their bill and try to toss it in the garbage can naming a blessing that comes from being reverent. (E.g. Peace, Happiness, Eternal Life, Holy Ghost will be close...)

Mormon Life says: Teaching reverence to Primary children can be difficult, but this month's sharing time will help involve them in an activity that will help them understand the concept.

This sharing time will involve the children in an activity to help them understand reverence.

Preparation: Make a poster of Matthew 22:37: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.” Post it at the front of the room.

Presentation: Ask the children if they know what reverence means. Briefly discuss it, helping them to understand that reverence is more that just being quiet. Tell them that reverence is something you feel as well as do. Have the children read the scripture from Matthew together. Explain that reverence is one way of feeling and showing love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Tell them you are going to try an experiment. Ask them sit quietly and do everything you tell them (make sure you speak with a very calm voice).

Tell them to close their eyes and imagine themselves in the following scenario: “You are walking down a path in a meadow. The meadow is filled with beautiful flowers. Birds are singing. The sky is blue and the sun is warm. You feel quiet and happy. As you walk, you realize that someone is approaching you from far down the path. You walk toward each other for a while. Now you can see him clearly. You stop as you realize it is the Savior.

“He continues to walk steadily toward you. As he nears, you fall to your knees. He stops before you, reaches down to take your hand, and lifts you to your feet. Then he embraces you. As his arms fold around you, you feel his spirit wash over your entire body. He steps back, and as you look into his eyes you see his gentle love and concern for you. You stay there for a moment just looking into his eyes. Then, slowly, you turn and go back the way you have come. You walk back through the meadow and into your seats in this room. Now, open your eyes.” (See Joan B. MacDonald, Holiness of Everyday Life, [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1995].)

Tell them that some of the words to one of our sacrament hymns says "Jesus, the very thought of thee, with sweetness fills my breast." Help them understand that “sweetness” is the love we feel for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. Explain that they can take this imaginary walk with Jesus during the sacrament quiet time or whenever they desire.

If time allows, let the children quietly color a picture of the meadow they imagined. Bear your testimony of your love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Sing songs that will reinforce reverence, such as "Reverently, Quietly,” Children’s Songbook, p. 26; “I Will Try to Be Reverent,” Children’s Songbook, p. 28; “Reverence is Love,” Children’s Songbook, p. 31; and “This Is God’s House,” Children’s Songbook, p. 30.

For the first 10 minutes of class each week, Sean Dolan helps the 10 and 11-year-old boys of the Winder 5th Ward, Salt Lake Winder West Stake, open their scriptures and study, mark and discuss the verses they read.

In the middle of the Primary room of the Provo Canyon Ward, Provo Utah Edgemont North Stake, hangs a bulletin board with photos of each Primary child holding on to the iron rod.

In the Spring Creek 22nd Ward, Salt Lake Olympus Stake, Primary, the children hold their scriptures, they hug their scriptures, they hoist them in air while singing the children's song, "Scripture Power."

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will involve the children as they learn more about prayer.

Preparation:
Gather a number of communication visual aids (some may need to be photographs) such as a letter or postcard, a walkie-talkie, an old telephone with a cord, a radio, a computer, a cell phone, a picture of telegraph, etc. Place them on a table and board at the front of the room. Write the scripture references below on six strips of paper. Have blank papers and crayons or markers available.

Presentation:
Show the children the display of items/pictures at the front of the room. Tell them that all of these things can be used for the same thing. Have the children guess what that is. Let them guess until they figure out that all of them can be used to get messages from one person to another.

Explain to the children that there is someone you can communicate with, without using any of these items. That person is Heavenly Father. You can talk to him whenever you need to, just by saying a prayer.

Tell the children they are going to help each other learn more about prayer. Divide the children into six groups. Make sure a teacher or other leader is in each group. Give each group one of the scripture references. Let them take a few minutes to read the scripture and create a simple drawing that shows what that scripture teaches us about prayer (who, when, or where).

Let each group present their picture and explain their scripture.

3 Nephi 18:21. Pray in your families unto the Father, always in my name, that your wives and your children may be blessed.

Matthew 6:6. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

1 Nephi 16:32. Now when they beheld that I had obtained food, how great was their joy! And it came to pass that they did humble themselves before the Lord, and did give thanks unto him.

Psalms 55:16-17. As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me. Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice.

Matthew 21:13. And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer.

Alma 34:19-20. Yea, humble yourselves, and continue in prayer unto him. Cry unto him when ye are in your fields, yea, over all your flocks.

After all the groups have presented their scripture and drawing, reinforce the messages taught and bear your testimony of prayer.
