A group of angry residents from Queens took a bus to Downtown Manhattan today to protest a Mormon Church moving to their neighborhood.

"They want to build a structure that's twice the size than they allow," said Tyler Cassell, of Community Board 7.

As Mitt Romney’s status as the Republican presidential nominee is becoming more and more certain, Mormonism—Romney’s declared faith—is facing new scrutiny.

Last month, a comment in the Washington Post by a Brigham Young University professor prompted an official Mormon Church statement clarifying its position on the historical priesthood ban on African-Americans, which was lifted in 1978. “We condemn racism, including any and all past racism by individuals both inside and outside the Church,” the statement read.

Bayside activists are dogmatic in their opposition to the construction of a Latter Day Saints Church in Flushing, but purportedly not for religious reasons.

If the church were to be built at 145-15 33rd Ave. as planned, it would account for 23,000 square feet of its neighborhood in Flushing, and have a 94-foot steeple. A protest held on March 8 drew many neighborhood preservationists, including Bayside Hills Civic Association President Michael Feiner. In Feiner's words:

It’ll take a prayer.

The Mormon Church will have to re-examine its options after Community Board 7 (CB 7) unanimously rejected a request for zoning variances for a proposed church on 33rd Avenue in Flushing.

Mormon Life says: The land being sold has been used by church members and the community as a local gathering place and they don't want to lose it.

The wider world does not often glimpse the internal disputes of the Mormon Church. Formally known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the fast-growing religion is expanding in places as far-flung as Africa and Latin America, but most big decisions are still made centrally by a church hierarchy in Salt Lake City.

Recently, though, a debate over a ramshackle church property in Harlem has spilled into public view. And perhaps it is no surprise what subject could raise passions strong enough to override Mormons’ aversion to airing differences outside the church: Manhattan real estate.
We are writing this week's column from New York City, where we have just welcomed our 23rd grandchild into the world. (Hey, if you are a fresh, new spirit going to go down into the world, why not start your life off right in the middle of the Big Apple?)

This city has been a second home to us in many ways for many years. I (Richard) served my first mission here, several of our kids studied here and two started their careers here.

During my mission, there was only one LDS chapel in Manhattan, and it was a converted Jewish synagogue on West 81st Street, where we met without a choir but with a chamber music group composed of Julliard students who had joined the church. The Upper West Side was a dangerous place in those days. One Sunday morning, a brother got stabbed on his way to priesthood meeting, and we missionaries were glad for the flannel boards we carried under our arms in long black cases, which some mistook for firearms and thus left us alone.

Donny and Marie Osmond stood at the top of wholesome, family-oriented entertainment 35 years ago, back when they were teenagers and Times Square was full of X-rated movie houses and adult book stores.

The duo from Utah’s famous first family of singers were chided for their uncompromising approach to old-style entertainment during the 1980s. That was the era when Times Square began its gradual transformation into a center of pulsing lights, shops and attractions that makes visitors feel as if they are inside a video game.

True fans might say the timing couldn’t be better for a Donny and Marie show on Broadway. Ticketholders to Dec. 9’s opening show sounded more interested in extending old memories into the future than making side-by-side comparisons.

Mormon Life says: The LDS Church is also in support of the Utah Compact.

Not all the political news this year involves the rise of partisan extremism and government by rage. There has been lots of that. But maybe there is a limit, a point when people of good sense and good will band together to say no. As they have just done in Utah.

Political, business, law-enforcement and religious leaders there have endorsed what they call the Utah Compact. It is a statement of principles meant to address, with moderation and civility, “the complex challenges associated with a broken national immigration system.” What a welcome contrast it draws with the xenophobic radicalism of places like Arizona.

*You can also read about the story on LDS.org Newsroom.
