For the first time in nearly 45 years, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir is set to perform in Arizona Feb. 10-11. The special occasion is part of Arizona's centennial celebration.

"We are thrilled to have them come," said Karen Churchard, director of the Arizona Centennial Commission. "This concert was actually the first of our signature events that we identified and approved."

As audiences have been dazzled by the performances at this year's Christmas concert of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, Orchestra at Temple Square and Bells on Temple Square, the guest artists have been thrilled by the whole experience.

"For me, this is the gift of Christmas," said British actress Jane Seymour in a news conference Friday, the morning after the dress rehearsal of the concert in the LDS Conference Center.

For nearly a decade, each annual Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas concert has been recorded for nationwide presentation the following year over PBS stations. This year's event began with an announcement about the program's pre-eminence in the yuletide market.

"It gives me great pleasure tonight to announce that this program has become the number-one-rated entertainment program on PBS during the holidays, with more than 4 million Americans tuning in to watch it each year," said Paula Kerger, PBS president.

When Nathan Gunn steps on stage as a soloist during the Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square concerts, it will not be his first performance with the choir. In 1999 Gunn sang Brahms’ “German Requiem” with the choir. But that highly acclaimed live recording was made in the choir's home, the Tabernacle on Temple Square, not the 21,000-seat LDS Conference Center.

“During the previous concerts, all of the guest artists have commented on how big the hall is and how intimate it feels, so I’m determined not to,” he says with a chuckle. “Maybe I’m going to tell the audience, ‘I want to take a picture of all of you. Can you guys on the right please move to the left…’

Mormon Life says: Looking forward to December 13 for "Christmas With the Mormon Tabernacle Choir." When Syndy Lambert was 10 years old, her mother joined the ranks of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Thanks in no small measure to the choir's annual Christmas concerts, daughter couldn't have been more enamored with her mom's decision.

"I looked forward to those (Christmas concerts) every year — that was one of my big highlights," Lambert recalled recently. "When I was in junior high and high school I would go to just about every rehearsal with my mom. … Even though it was cold outside, to come in and feel the warmth and the beauty of the songs was amazing. To hear that incredible sound the choir creates, and feel the spirit that's there — there just isn't anything like it anywhere."

Mormon Life says: This makes sense. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir will not do a live broadcast of its weekly "Music and the Spoken Word" program on Christmas Day, which falls on Sunday this year.

I am one of those lucky people who, along with 60,000 of my fellow fans, will be attending one of the three nights of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Christmas concert next week. This is a family tradition, starting from when I was old enough (8 years old) to attend the concerts with my father. My mom sang in the ‘MoTab’ for twenty years, from the time I was six until I was twenty-six, and this 15-20 hour week commitment on her part has my dad saying he was a “bishop’s wife” for twenty years.

The Choir is known for its stirring patriotic music from "God Bless America" to "America, the Dream Goes On." True to that tradition, in conjunction with BYU Broadcasting, the Choir has prepared "The Mormon Tabernacle Choir Salutes Our Armed Forces," a one hour special featuring Broadway super-star Brian Stokes Mitchell and recording artist Linda Eder which will air on BYUtv and KBYU in November. The program was recorded during a live concert performed by the Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square earlier in the year. The Veteran's Day tribute recognizes those who have left their homes to bring peace to troubled areas around the world.

In order to make it perfectly clear how far the Lord has taken me on my road to happiness, let me describe myself before He placed His hand on my shoulder and said, “You’re wrong.”

In the first place I had been taught nothing of a religious nature. God was not mentioned in our home and Christ very seldom. I was taught to live the good life: that we must be good because it is right. How lacking in strength and resistance that doctrine is I have found to my cost. Without Christ by our side we can’t really live the good life.

At last, after living a selfish, self-centered life, I came to the end of my active career. Ill and without any outlook I felt it would be perfectly fair to the world to utterly destroy myself. I became obsessed with the idea. Death ends all! Why wait?

I was in just such an attitude of mind one Sunday morning when a friend came in silently and tuned the radio to “The Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir and Organ,” station KSL.

Actress Jane Seymour and opera star Nathan Gunn will join the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square for their 2011 Christmas concerts, titled “Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square.” Mack Wilberg and Ryan Murphy will conduct the concerts.

The concerts will be presented in the Conference Center in downtown Salt Lake City on Thursday, 15 December, Friday, 16 December, and Saturday, 17 December. All the evening concerts begin at 8 p.m. The weekly half-hour CBS radio broadcast of Music and the Spoken Word on Sunday, 18 December, at 9:30 a.m. in the Conference Center will also feature Gunn and Seymour. The broadcast will be followed by a mini-concert featuring additional music from the previous performances.

When composer Hector Berlioz published his "Requiem" in 1837, he noted that "if space permits, the chorus may be doubled or tripled, and the orchestra be proportionally increased." Doubtless, Berlioz would have approved of the performance of his masterwork on Sept. 16 and 17 by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Utah Symphony in the Salt Lake Tabernacle.

The choir, of course is comprised of about 375 voices nearly double the 200 that the published score calls for. And the symphony, considered one of Utah's cultural treasures, was an appropriate partner to the choir for this performance.

As the nation looked back on a decade since the 9/11 destruction, it was fitting, perhaps, that the 10-year anniversary fell on a Sunday, when much of the citizenry is typically in an attitude of reverence and prayer.

The timing was impeccable for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, as the presentation of its nationwide weekly TV and radio program "Music and the Spoken Word" could be devoted to a remembrance of that horrific event and, more particularly, a celebration of how Americans have overcome it.
