In an area of the United States hallowed by the suffering and sacrifices of Latter-day Saints in the late 1830s, President Thomas S. Monson dedicated on May 6 the Church's 137th operating temple.
The Kansas City Missouri Temple is located in western Missouri's Clay County, an area rich in early Church history. At Liberty, Mo., just six miles slightly northeast of the new temple, the Lord gave to the Prophet Joseph Smith revelations of comfort, affirmation and instruction, which are recorded in Sections 121-123 of the Doctrine and Covenants. Those revelations came while the Prophet and several of his associates in the gospel were held from December 1838 until April 1839 in the "dungeon" of Liberty Jail.

President Thomas S. Monson delivered a message of praise, encouragement and friendship to the youth of the Church who staged a cultural program with “heart” on Saturday evening, May 5, the eve of the dedication of the Kansas City Missouri Temple.

“The stately and magnificent Kansas City Temple, in this lovely part of the country — really, the heartland of America — will be dedicated in the morning. It is, of course, the reason for this great celebration,” President Monson said in a brief address prior to the program.

It was just a small group - perhaps a dozen and a half people - who assembled in one of the most sacred rooms of the new Mormon temple in Kansas City, Missouri, a couple of weeks ago, but what happened there was deeply significant and will be long remembered.

It was during the public open house --the period when newly built temples are opened to the public for several weeks before they are officially dedicated. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, along with the state’s first lady, the attorney general, several dignitaries and a handful of church officials, had toured most of the building and had found their way to one of the sealing rooms on an upper floor. This is the place in the temple where members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints undertake their most sacred sacraments --the marriage ceremonies that they believe unite couples for eternity.

As I stood in front of the new Mormon Temple in Liberty, Mo., it struck me as ironic that close to 175 years ago, Mormons were forced out of this same state.

Whereas the Missouri public once urged their governor to force Joseph Smith and his followers out of the area surrounding Kansas City, Mormons began to return to the region in the 1900s, eventually gathering in such large numbers that the Church organization decided the region needed a temple.

Which is why I came to visit.

Searching for their own "Only a Stonecutter" moment, young men and young women and their leaders, parents and friends from the Kaw River Ward, Lenexa Kansas Stake, walked 20 miles on March 17 from their meetinghouse to the recently completed Kansas City Missouri Temple.

Outfitted in lime green T-shirts with an illustration of the temple and the slogan, "I love to see the temple, I'm walking there TODAY … with faith in every footstep," the 50-plus trekkers began their walk with some trepidation but with overwhelming enthusiasm.

Mormon Life says: CNN attended the Kansas City Temple open house and does a nice job explaining what Mormon temples are all about in this article.

Elder William Walker slipped white booties over his black wing-tip shoes and instructed his guests to do the same as he led them into the newest Mormon temple in the world.

This day was the first chance the public had to see inside the sacred space for the area’s 49,000 Mormons, and it was also one of the last.

On May 6, when Thomas S. Monson, the head of the 14 million member Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, dedicates this temple, the doors will close forever to the public. The church said it expects as many as 100,000 visitors in Kansas City before the temple will be closed to the public.
