Driving south on Provo's University Avenue on a clear Saturday morning, orange balloons dot the sky.

The closer one comes to their source, a house on Lambert Lane, more come into view. A handful of neighbors fill the balloons, tie them to strings at least 160 feet long and place them in their cars for distribution.

"They're just a reminder that there is a building that is proposed," said organizer R. Paul Evans. "(We're) trying to get a dialogue with the people who make decisions, to meet their needs as well as the flavor of this neighborhood."

Pleasant View neighborhood residents weren’t satisfied after a presentation on plans for a nine-story building at the LDS Missionary Training Center.

"I wonder why [The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints] didn’t contact the people before they hired the architects," said resident Kay Woodworth. "I feel tricked."

Mormon Life says: Missionaries in the MTC are writing home about Elder David Archuleta. Read what they have to say.

Murray native and "American Idol" finalist David Archuleta began his journey to become a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by entering the Missionary Training Center in late March.

It was thought that once he went inside the doors of the secretive Provo institution, the 21-year-old would be out of the public eye for about two years, spending about 10 weeks at the MTC and then the rest of his time in his assigned mission, reportedly in Chile.

But this is an age where social media breaks down ramparts and bulwarks, no matter how much Elder Archuleta desires his pious privacy. As a consequence, the public and his fans have been able to read about his experiences through blog posts written by fellow elders and sisters at MTC.

Mormon Life says: Most people oppose the building, which will be as tall as the LaVell Edwards Stadium.

That meeting held for neighbors by the Missionary Training Center on Thursday sounded a lot like LDS missionaries knocking on the door of a non-believer: one side believes that when the prophet speaks the debate is over, while the other believes it is just beginning.

The subject of the debate is the proposed nine-story building to be constructed on the MTC campus. More than 100 residents met at Rock Canyon Elementary School to view proposed site plans, voice concerns and stand up for their property values and skyline views.

Mormon Life says: A lot of people are concerned the building will block their view.

When neighbors of the Missionary Training Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gather Thursday evening to talk to church officials about plans to build a new nine-story building on the MTC campus, they'll not only get to talk about the building, they'll get to see it.

The LDS Church today released an architect's rendering of the as-yet-unnamed building, which will be built on the MTC campus where the Melvin J. Ballard Building is currently located. The Ballard Building is known to generations of LDS missionaries as the location for the MTC bookstore, mailroom and Training Resource Center.

Construction activities for the as-yet-unnamed building are scheduled to begin in late summer 2012, with completion anticipated in late 2014.

Three years after the Church was organized, the Lord decreed that "every man shall hear the fulness of the gospel in his own tongue, and in his own language, through those who are ordained unto this power" (Doctrine and Covenants 90:11).
Today's missionary training centers — including the first one established 37 years ago in Provo, Utah — help fulfill that prophecy and are the culmination of a modest effort that began 50 years ago this past December.

Teaching others the doctrine of Christ, inviting them to come unto Him and helping them endure to the end are components of what many of the Brethren are now calling "real growth" in the Church, Elder David F. Evans of the Seventy said in his presentation Jan. 10 at the Seminar for New Missionary Training Center Presidents and Visitors' Center Directors.

Staring in just a few days in May, all MTC's around the world are changing their training curriculum for all new missionaries. In the past, new missionaries were learning the doctrines of PMG chapter 3, relating to the lesson content of their teaching. No longer will that happen. What this means is that new missionaries will arrive to the mission field not knowing the lessons from chapter 3 unless they studied them before their mission.

In a recent mission president's seminar we were instructed that starting August 1st, a new 12-week 'in-field' training effort would begin for new missionary arrivals. This 12-week infield study will help them learn chapter 3 lessons and qualify their doctrinal content for teaching. Personally I see this as a great step forward and improvement in missionary preparation. Both these changes in training will result in a more effective missionary teacher.
The Missionary Training Center of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the MTC, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

The idea of how to train young men and women and senior couples to do missionary work has changed in the 21st Century -- everything from learning languages to staying fit. But it begins with leaving family and friends -- always an emotional experience.

Every Wednesday, families and friends say farewell to young Latter-day Saint men and women, volunteering 18 months to 2 years to preach, teach and serve somewhere in the world.

"It's very exciting but it's hard too," said missionary mother Kim Bracken. "It's mostly exciting. I have to admit, it's mostly exciting.
