Classically trained symbolist and figurative artist Jenny Elizabeth was raised in New England and the Western United States. In 2005 she attended the Carl Bloch Academy. She travels frequently throughout Europe studying art and art history. At present she owns Ava Fine Art Studio with Patrick Devonas, in which she paints full time and teaches privately.

Robert Boyd
For eight years Robert A. Boyd has been creating images of temples around the world in a unique fine-art style. A professional photographer for nearly seventeen years, Robert traveled the world photographing for clients, when one day his mother-in-law expressed her longing for a beautiful picture of the temple, and suggested that he should use his talents to photograph the temple in his artistic style. As soon as he began to try this it seemed as if new, beautiful scenes were now waiting for him every time he went to photograph. Robert hopes to share his feelings of the beauty of the temple as he strives to illuminate his photographs with peace, light and balance. He lives in Utah with his wife, Eleah, and their five children.

Shirley McKay Britsch
At age 32, Shirley found herself a widow with five children under age eight. Her children were the joy of her life, but as the last of them left home, Shirley concentrated more on her personal life and returned to school in the early 80s, earning a degree in graphic design and illustration. She has been painting professionally ever since. Shirley creates art with watercolor, acrylics, casein, collage and even Chinese inks on rice paper. She loves Chinese painting and has been influenced by travels in Asia as well as studying with Asian instructors, including Katherine Chang Liu, Glenn Bradshaw, and Marilyn Hughey Phillis. Shirley has also been greatly influenced by the luminosity of the Hudson River painters.

A surprising number of physically and emotionally disabled Mormon emigrants attempted to cross the plains to Zion. Mormon emigrant companies probably had a higher percentage of disabled people than non-Mormon companies, because of the Latter-day Saints’ belief in priesthood power. Presenter Bryce Fifield tells of the sick, wounded, lame, and blind whose stories shed light on the broader cultural narrative of the Latter-day Saints. Admission is free. Linda Curley Christensen
Linda born in Idaho, reared in Salt Lake City, Utah, started painting when her family was young. She has received substantial attention in recent years being privileged to paint for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the Conference Center, South Visitor’s Center of Temple Square, and temples throughout the world, as well as heading a mural team. Linda, a very prolific artist herself has found a new love in mentoring other artists. Recognition’s include the National Gertrude Folgeson Art Award, signature status in Oil Painters of America, and she was named one of Utah’s top 100 Artists. She recently won the championship round of the worlds first "Western Art Rodeo".

Why I Believe: Olga Campora

Olga Kovarova Campora was born, raised, educated and joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). She came to the United States in the early 1990s where she helped to establish the Czech language program for the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah. She is the author of Saints Behind Enemy Lines, the story of her life in Czechoslovakia. Sister Campora currently serves as Relief Society President in the Columbia, Maryland 2nd Ward, and she and her husband, Randy, are the parents of two children.

Two Talented Artists: Scott Sumner & Sandra Rast
Scott has a background in art and illustration. He has been a professional photographer, for the past nine years with clients all over the United States. Scott currently has a piece exhibited at the Museum of Church History and Art as a participant in the Ninth International Art Competition. He has received several awards for his work depicting the Savior, Jesus Christ, from the Intermountain Professional Photographers Association of Utah (IPPA). He is a founding board member of the Inspirational Art Association and currently serves as President of their Board of Directors. Scott has several stunning photos in the Jeffry R. Holland quote book: “Created for Greater Things.”

For Sandra, the love of art and the passion for painting and drawing have been a great influence and factor in her personality and life. Her upbringing, a grandfather nicknamed Johnny Appleseed, teachings of pioneer descendants a homemade green house, pet chickens, lambs, the love of family, the love of being a mother, and the appreciation of the earth's beauty are all embedded in emotions of the subject matter she chooses to paint. She majored in fine art at the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. Each of her paintings show a deep feeling of intimacy of her beliefs and emotions which she portrays through color & composition.

AKA: The Tulip Lady! "I believe that flowers exist to beautify our world and bring us joy," says Sarah. "The beauty of a flower is so amazing, yet so fleeting. My paintings are the way that I share the joy I feel from the beauty around me."

INSIGHT INTO MY LOVE OF RED TULIPS: After the tulips bloom, the other flowers, plants and trees begin to don their colors. They take their cue from the awakening tulips. Tulips are a sign of spring; they are a sign of rebirth. Their splendor begins the new season and encourages the rest of nature to join the celebration. Tulips are the beginning, the hope of things to come, and the reassurance there is indeed a God who loves us and provides for all our needs, leaving us uplifted and edified.

Howard Lyon
Howard was born and raised in Mesa, Arizona, to supportive parents, who even when he was very young, made sure he had the materials and education to hone his talent. Howard and his wife, Shari, are raising their three children in Mesa.

Howard's work can be found in products from Dungeons and Dragons books, World of Warcraft cards, Magic the Gathering, Orson Scott Card’s Inter Galactic Medicine Show and Star Wars. He has studied art in Italy, France, and most recently at the Grand Central Academy in New York. Howard combined these experiences to expand his subject matter to create inspirational pieces in the style of some of his favorite old masters: William Bouguereau, Lawrence Alma-Tadema, and John William Waterhouse.

Annie graduated with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts degree from Brigham Young University in 2010, but has shown her work in galleries since the age of sixteen. Her work is currently shown at Bronze Coast Gallery in Cannon Beach, Oregon, and Sage Creek Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She is the daughter of Cary Henrie, a well known illustrator and fine artist, who has taught his daughter how to paint and draw since kindergarten, and has been inspiration for his daughter throughout her life.

Art has always been a part of life for Amy. Extensive travel has enabled Amy to view and appreciate great master works of art throughout Europe, China, and the Middle-East--and yet she is drawn continually to the simple beauty of the Tennessee landscape. Pastures, rolling hills, and old wooden barns fill Amy's miniature oil paintings: reminders of the lush greenery and tender landscape of her formative years. Amy currently lives in Woodland Hills, Utah. She and her artist husband are the parents of four children who love to draw and paint.

This year’s open house features Latter-day Saint cultural events and celebrations. Artifacts, photographs, and programs from July 24th celebrations, Gold and Green Balls, the Hill Cumorah Pageant, and other Church festivals are highlighted. Admission is free. Items from the 1964 New York World’s Fair, the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, and the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Games are also on display, and the history of Church sports—principally baseball and basketball—are also showcased. The exhibit will extend its hours to 9:00 p.m. Saturday, March 24 and Friday, March 30. Saturday, March 31 hours are 12:00-2:00 p.m. and 4:00-9:00 p.m.

Allowing for inspiration in the form of a peculiar hunch, Brian Kershisnik welcomes the influence of children, artistic greats and cave paintings in his oil on paper and panel works. Purposely avoiding following one rigid technique, Kershisnik allows for experimentation and inspiration to guide his open-ended images. He contends that the purpose of his art is to facilitate the understanding of what it means to be human - the awkward discoveries, happy encounters, deep sorrows and immense joys.

Julie is known for her vibrant colors and impressionistic style, masterfully executes pastels, watercolors and oil paintings. “I love to record the simple things people do each day and capture the emotion of the moment. “Although I grew up right outside of Chicago Illinois, the desert has always been my home. As a teenager I studied Utah’s great Impressionist tradition with Lorrand Folland. More recently I have studied with J. Kirk Richards, Robert Barrett, Justin Taylor, and Greg Newbold. I have had the fun of illustrating for BYUtv and for the Joseph and Lucy Mack Smith Family foundation and Joseph F. Smith Family Outreach Committee. Although my watercolors have achieved a lot of acclaim for their unique impressionistic beauty, my heart aches to express the metaphor of life. In particular I work to portray our common human need for relationships.”

This year’s open house features Latter-day Saint cultural events and celebrations. Artifacts, photographs, and programs from July 24th celebrations, Gold and Green Balls, the Hill Cumorah Pageant, and other Church festivals are highlighted. Admission is free. Items from the 1964 New York World’s Fair, the 1952 Helsinki Olympic Games, and the 2002 Salt Lake Olympic Games are also on display, and the history of Church sports—principally baseball and basketball—are also showcased. The exhibit will extend its hours to 9:00 p.m. Saturday, March 24 and Friday, March 30. Saturday, March 31 hours are 12:00-2:00 p.m. and 4:00-9:00 p.m.

Kirk is becoming increasingly known for his accomplishments as a painter of Judeo-Christian themes. While not all of his paintings are overtly religious, the majority of his themes stem from spiritual ideas and narratives. He continues to work in a surprising variety of styles, but most of his paintings exhibit a love for the human figure, general use of symbolism and metaphor, and an emphasis on lyric composition. His work is found in private collections across the country. He attributes much of his love for the arts to an early emphasis on music in his home. As a teen he turned from music to visual arts.

Ken was an artist at American Greeting’s World Headquarters in Cleveland Ohio for 12 years. He owns and operates a decorative painting business specializing in murals and specialty interior finishes. This work feeds his family but his love for “en plein air” painting feeds his soul. Ken lives in the St. George area with his lovely wife Jan.

Steve’s education in art ranges from studies at the University of Utah to travels in Russia, Paris, and England. He continues his education through painting and studying with other artists, visiting museums and art shows, and reading art books. Steve admires the spontaneity and light of the Impressionists and the rich values of the old masters. He saw many of these works first hand in Russia and Paris, and has combined the strengths of these two schools to create his own style. He feels that the sounds, smells and atmosphere play an integral role in the true emotion of each painting. He is President of Plein Air Painters of Utah.

The Alfred Street Baptist Church Senior Choir, one of the DC-area's best known and most accomplished gospel choirs, was established in 1865 after control of the church property was returned by the Union army which had used the facility as a hospital and recruiting station. The Mormon Choir of Washington, D.C. was organized in 1980 and has appeared often before capacity crowds in the Nation's Capital, Maryland and Virginia. Liz Lemon Swindle
Liz began her painting career in first grade. Her first exhibitions were on the refrigerator, encouraged by her father. In the early 1980s she tutored under renowned wildlife artist, Nancy Glazier. In 1992, Liz began painting a subject matter she had long desired to approach: her faith. Her paintings are now held in corporate and private collections around the world and have been published in countless magazines and books. She is extremely prolific, and has created numerous paintings around a central theme, one group being of the life and experiences of Mormon prophet Joseph Smith, and another group centered on the life of Christ.

“Why I Believe”—Brother Chris and Sister Eme Martin
Brother Chris Martin is a third year law student at Howard University School of Law; he graduated in Sociology and African American Studies at Saint Louis University. He joined the Church in Modesto, California, in 1999, served a mission in St. Louis, Missouri, and has held a number of callings.

Sister Emeobong “Eme” Martin is a native of the Washington, DC area and is a public health specialist. Sister Martin is one of four children to Nigerian immigrants. Since joining the Church, Sister Martin has held several callings in various auxiliaries, but admittedly one of her favorite callings was serving as a full-time missionary in St. Louis, Missouri.

Anne Marie is a traditional realist who accents her work with a sense of impressionism. A Native of Pocatello, Idaho, she graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree from Idaho State University. Color harmony and quality of light are characteristic of her sensitive portraits, sunlit floras, and bravura landscapes. Honored by the authors, Anne Marie has illustrated three books: The Daffodil Principle, A Mother’s Love, and His Gift. She is a signature member of Oil Painter’s of America.

Elder Marcus B. Nash of the Seventy will be presenting "Men and Women of Faith in Church History," at the first lecture of the year. This new series of lectures, sponsored by the Church History Library, looks at men and women from Church history to learn how their faith enabled them to overcome seemingly insurmountable trials in their lives. Admission is free.

Robert Fitt was born in 1930 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He completed his BS degree in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Utah. He was at once a husband, father, skilled brick mason, builder, and later, an art teacher and a school administrator.He sketched, painted and sculpted at home as a hobby all his adult life. Robert’s Lunch and Learn appearance will focus on his sculpting talent. He has studied under Avard Fairbanks, Stan Watts and Clayton Robbins.
