Many LDS people who’ve visited the Holy Land will tell you that it deepened their understanding of the the scriptures in a big way. Being able to walk the same places where Old and New Testament figures, including Christ himself, once walked, changes their perspective and appreciation for the culture, languages, traditions, and the events and people of those sacred books of scripture.

4 a.m. My eyes feel heavy. Today is my second day of digging.

I'm in Israel for a week-long archaeological dig — not your regular vacation, but one that brought fulfillment and surprisingly more rest than I've gotten sitting on the beach.

Richard Stamps, a professor of anthropology, and Mike Pytlik, a special lecturer of archaeology and Jewish studies at Michigan's Oakland University, each year lead a group of students on a three-week archaeological dig and tour of Israel. Pytlik invited me to go along as a volunteer for a week.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is planning to blitz the world of social media this weekend with a new media campaign aimed at helping "those not of our faith understand that we believe in and follow Jesus Christ."

In an email sent from the LDS Church Missionary Department to those who have created profiles on the church's Mormon.org website, officials said the campaign will take place Friday through Sunday on YouTube and Facebook, and will feature "members of the church sharing their beliefs about the Savior."

The campaign will consist of paid advertising on YouTube during the weekend, which they expect to be viewed "a minimum of 15 million times."

With the subsequent unrest in the Middle East, we never pursued the Israel trip, although some day I still hope to see those special places we read about in the scriptures.

Matti Friedman of the Associated Press published news about a recent excavation in the City of David in Jerusalem, near the Gihon Spring. The excavation revealed an interesting set of markings carved into the stone floor of a room, and expert archeologists cannot determine what their meaning or use was. The markings consist of three “V” marks, or perhaps gammadia “Γ,” although one is inverted from the other two, plus a straight line mark. They date to about 800 B.C.

When it comes to BYU's Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies, no news is good news, and right now the going is great.

That's essentially the message program director Eran Hayet conveyed during an interview in his office at the Jerusalem Center, which is situated atop Mount Scopus and endowed with an idyllic view of the Old City.

"We are following more or less the same model that we always have," said Hayet, who has worked at the center since 1994. "We might change a field trip here or there … but these are minor changes. All in all we are following the same model."

The Jerusalem Center, closed from 2001 to 2006 because of safety concerns, welcomes a new group of about 80 university students every four months.

It's spring in Israel, just weeks before Easter Sunday. On hilly terrain right outside Jerusalem's Old City, the sunlight is filtering through berry-tree branches as chirping birds warble gay ditties on the grounds of the Garden Tomb.

Not far from the sepulcher where tradition holds that Jesus' body once lay, a couple of dozen African Christians stand in concentric circles as they clap and sway and sing soulful songs of adoration. On the other side of a footpath a British congregation intently listens to its pastor's sermon, quietly seated beneath a large tree's shady refuge on carefully arranged rows of pews.

The two groups have come here — the place where many Christians believe Jesus was buried and subsequently resurrected — for precisely the same reason: to worship on hallowed ground.

Without warning, a hailstorm of noise suddenly shatters the peaceful ambiance. The six-times-a-day Islamic call to prayer, synchronously blaring from five mosques within earshot, audibly assails the Garden Tomb in Arabic for about two minutes.

The British pastor folds his arms, purses his lips and furrows his brow while waiting for the loud sounds to abate before proceeding. The Africans, though, just keep on singing.

A discovery in the Middle East of more than 20 ancient lead plate "books" — each with five to 15 pages — is being hailed by some as one of the most important religious discoveries of the past. Others are calling it ridiculous.

The director of the country of Jordan's Department of Antiquities, Ziad al-Saad, told BBC that the books might have been made by followers of Jesus in the few decades immediately following his crucifixion. "They will really match, and perhaps be more significant than, the Dead Sea Scrolls," Saad said. "It seems that we are looking at a very important and significant discovery, maybe the most important discovery in the history of archaeology."

Jeff Chadwick, a practicing field archeologist who is in Israel as BYU's Jerusalem Center Professor of Archeology and Near Eastern studies thinks it is a silly story. "Almost everybody is getting wrong. I couldn't believe that Fox News picked it up," he said. "This is not going to pass the smell test in the end run."

One of the sticking points is the origin of the plates.
