So we all get a lesson next Sunday from the new Teachings of the Presidents of the Church: George Albert Smith manual, and I suspect that many wards, like mine, used the first Sunday for a biographical overview. Teachers may have mentioned that President Smith was the namesake of his grandfather, George A. Smith, a cousin of Joseph Smith’s and an early church leader himself, especially during Brigham Young’s tenure.

Editor's note: This is an excerpt from "Against the Odds: The Life of George Albert Smith," by Mary Jane Woodger and published by Covenant Communications.

Though George Albert Smith entered the First Presidency in his eighth decade, he was insistent that his age not be a handicap. One of his favorite sayings was, “I would rather be 78 years young than 50 years old.”

In his efforts to maintain a youthful energy while serving as the president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, President Smith kept a rigid dietary routine. He typically ate a light breakfast, consisting generally of prunes and a dish of steamed wheat with cream.

George Albert Smith was just 13 years old in January 1884 when Zebedee Coltrin, an ordained patriarch who had been a confidant of the Prophet Joseph Smith during the turbulent days of early Church history, appeared unexpectedly at the Smith family home in Salt Lake City with the intention to bless the boy.
"Thou shalt become a mighty prophet in the midst of the sons of Zion," Brother Coltrin said in the blessing. "Thou shalt become a mighty apostle in the church and kingdom of God upon the earth, for none of thy father's family shall have more power with God than thou shalt have, for none shall excel thee."

After two years of studying the newly revised Gospel Principles book, adult members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will return to studying the Teachings of Presidents of the Church series in 2012, beginning with the George Albert Smith volume.

Teachings of Presidents of the Church is a series of manuals, each of which contains teachings and sermons of a single prophet of the Church. It has previously been studied during Relief Society and Melchizedek Priesthood meetings.

Teachings of Presidents of the Church: George Albert Smith is the 10th book in the series, which began in 1998 with the release of the Brigham Young volume.
