Last night I finally took the entire family to see The Avengers. For FHE. What? Yes, once in a while we go crazy on Monday night. It can't all be profound teaching and testimonies. It was also nice to go a week without singing Book of Mormon Stories, complete with hand actions.

The movie? I enjoyed it. Ten seconds of Hulk vs. Loki was worth the price of admission. Add to that a soda and popcorn, and you can't go wrong. My EC liked it too.

Ironically, what Jan and Eliza Dawson would most like to do with their children's fairy-tale movie project is encourage parents to turn off the screens in their children's lives.

They're hoping their series of stories featuring youngsters with simple costumes and everyday props will prompt parents to sit down and create art of all kind with their kids.

"We want them to turn off the screen and jump over to the activities," said Eliza Dawson, who is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. "What we really care about, what we really want to see happen is so much more than cute.

An actor from Utah is getting his big break on the silver screen.

Kirby Heyborne, a 34-year-old who grew up in Sandy, plays a supporting role in the recently released film, "The Three Stooges: The Movie."

Heyborne is best known among Utahns for his roles in LDS-themed films such as "The Singles Ward," "The RM," "The Best Two Years" and "Saints and Soldiers." He received his big break when he became acquainted with "Stooges" co-director Peter Farrelly while doing a commercial. Later, Farrelly called him to read for the role of Teddy, a character that grew up in the same orphanage as Larry, Moe and Curly and is later reunited with the Stooges as adults.

The documentary film Cleanflix tells the story of the dramatic rise and fall of businesses (based primarily in Utah) that rented and sold versions of Hollywood movies in which they had edited out bad language, nudity, sex scenes, gore, graphic violence, and anything else that they considered not a match for community standards. In telling the story from its origins to the court case that declared the practices as in violation of copyright agreements to the continuing saga of stores that refused to shut down even after the businesses were declared illegal, the film highlights deeply embedded attitudes in Mormon culture. What are the peculiar aspects of Mormonism that helped give rise to an industry that seemed fully intent on exploiting moral gray areas: letter versus spirit of gospel teachings, trying to eliminate guilt for wanting to be “part of” the world rather than fully “apart from” it, judging ones views of the value of certain art forms and messages as superior to that of the persons who created the art in the first place?

“Divisive” is probably not a word most people would use to describe the LDS Film Festival.

Independently established in 2001 as a way to showcase the work of LDS filmmakers for appreciative audiences, the Orem-based festival has for obvious reasons never courted controversy like its more prestigious counterparts Sundance or Slamdance — all three of which run concurrently during Utah’s thriving festival season each January.

However, a panel discussion held last Saturday elicited a surprisingly hostile response from several of the audience members in attendance.

Looking through the final schedule, this year’s LDS Film Festival has the usual variety of feature films, short films, and documentaries, but new this year are some “musical interludes” before screenings featuring local musical artists.
