When David Archuleta made his run to the finals of "American Idol" in 2008, he sang for millions of people every week.

He had a positive impact on legions of fans that supported and advanced him to his runner-up finish. They later purchased his albums and tracked his journey on Facebook, Twitter and through his YouTube channel. They attended concerts, firesides and rooted for his success.

It’s tough to quantify the positive impact this young man has had on millions of eyes, ears and hearts.

But you already know that story.

Mormon Life says: Missionaries in the MTC are writing home about Elder David Archuleta. Read what they have to say.

Murray native and "American Idol" finalist David Archuleta began his journey to become a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by entering the Missionary Training Center in late March.

It was thought that once he went inside the doors of the secretive Provo institution, the 21-year-old would be out of the public eye for about two years, spending about 10 weeks at the MTC and then the rest of his time in his assigned mission, reportedly in Chile.

But this is an age where social media breaks down ramparts and bulwarks, no matter how much Elder Archuleta desires his pious privacy. As a consequence, the public and his fans have been able to read about his experiences through blog posts written by fellow elders and sisters at MTC.

Mormon Life says: A nice overview of the missionary program.

At a concert in Salt Lake City last week, pop star David Archuleta of
American Idol fame made an unexpected and emotional announcement. After
a couple of years of skirting questions about it, he revealed that he
will indeed serve a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, though he hasn't made public where he will be sent.

Mr. Archuleta will join more than 52,000 Mormon missionaries serving
in 340 missions, or geographic areas, world-wide. Eighty percent of them
are young men who begin serving at age 19. The remainder are mostly
young women age 21 and older, along with a small number of retired
couples. It is estimated that roughly a third of eligible young Mormon
men elect to serve missions.

One of the first Christmas songs David Archuleta ever sang was “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” but he admits he has always hated that song.

The idea that his mother would ever kiss someone else besides him offended his sensibility. “I was super-protective of my mom,” Archuleta said. “Even when I was three, no one could touch my mommy. I would sing that song in a jealous way.”

So, when Archuleta headlines Abravanel Hall on Dec. 19 during his “My Kind of Christmas Tour,” suffice to say that particular song will not be on the set list.

Mormon Life says: Talented. Adorable. Sweet. These are just a few words often used to describe singing sensation David Archuleta. Before I met him, I couldn’t help but wonder how much of his image reflected who he really was. Here’s the story, folks: he’s the real deal. In fact, there’s a lot more to David than meets the eye.

I recently interviewed David Archuleta for a story in LDS Living's November/December issue (click here to read an excerpt). Just as I expected, he was gracious, humble, and delightful to talk to. But beyond his angelic and unassuming nature, David possesses a deep passion for music and a strong conviction to stay true to himself. I have to admit it—this is something I didn’t anticipate.

I knew David is very good at what he does (I was already a fan), but I admire him so much more now that I know he truly sees his talent as a gift from God and takes very seriously his responsibility to use it to uplift and inspire others. I saw nothing but sincerity in his eyes when he told me, “I want to sing about something that has a real message. That’s where my heart is. That’s what I love. I feel like that’s what I need to do.”

It was fascinating to listen to him talk about the pressures he has faced in the spotlight, particularly the pressure placed upon him by people in the music industry to portray a certain image or sing songs that he wasn’t comfortable with. In fact, my favorite moment with David was when he said, “No one can tell me who I am and am not. I’m just going to be true to myself.”

I have no doubt we will see great things from David in the future. One of the projects he hopes to complete soon, although there are no solid plans yet, is a Latin album in honor of his Hispanic roots (his mother, Lupe, is from Honduras). He also has a few surprises in store—whether in his personal life or professional life, he wouldn’t say, but it’s clear to me that David knows his own path, regardless of what anyone else has to say about it.

To view our David Archuleta photo gallery, click here.

To check out some behind-the-scenes video from our photoshoot with David and for his responses to some of our reader questions, click here.
—

Jamie Lawson is managing editor of LDS Living magazine. Mormon Life says: Since appearing on American Idol, David Archuleta has taken the music world by storm. Still, he's managed to stay true to himself and his values. LDS Living recently caught up with the star to talk about life, music, and what the future holds.

David Archuleta was born with music in his blood.

He grew up watching his father, Jeff, play the trumpet with various jazz bands and his mother, Lupe, shine on stage as a salsa singer and dancer. The second of five children, Archuleta would often perform musical numbers with his family for neighbors and friends. But it was at six years of age, when he watched a videotape of the tenth anniversary concert of Les Miserables, that his passion for music was irrevocably forged in his heart.

(David, around age 3. To view our David Archuleta photo gallery, click here.)

“I couldn’t stop watching,” Archuleta recalls. “I didn’t understand the story line, but I loved the way the people sang the songs. The melodies, the emotions—they captivated me.”

The Journey Begins

Inspired by Les Miserables, Archuleta became obsessed with singing despite being naturally shy and uncomfortable with the sound of his own voice. He continued to perform, improving his technique and showmanship with guidance from his parents. Then, when he was 10 years old, his mother entered him in his first competitive talent show—the 2001 Utah Talent Competition.

“I about had a heart attack because I was so nervous,” he recalls. “I’ve always been a worrywart and very self-conscious.” Despite his insecurity and self-doubt, and a full-blown panic attack backstage just minutes before his performance, Archuleta received a standing ovation for his rendition of “I Will Always Love You” and was declared the winner of the child division. Completely taken by surprise at his victory, he was thrilled at the audience’s response and found a deep sense of pride in facing his fears head on.

After the talent competition, Archuleta’s parents continued to search for opportunities for him to perform, including television appearances on the Jenny Jones Show and the Early Show on CBS. Then, in 2003, he competed on the television show Star Search, going on to become the Junior Vocal Champion. It was another confirmation that Archuleta’s life was on the right path. But soon that surety would be replaced with doubt and despair.

“I got invited back to Star Search the following year to do Battle of the Champions, but I started having struggles with my breathing, singing, and talking,” he recalls. “I was wheezing, and I could only sing for a few minutes at a time.” After a visit with the doctor, Archuleta received devastating news—he had partial vocal cord paralysis.

The options for treatment were either a high-risk surgery that could permanently damage his voice, or voice therapy, which would hopefully slowly rehabilitate the paralyzed chord. Archuleta opted for therapy but he wasn’t optimistic, and at 13 years old his dreams of being a singer quickly evaporated.

“When I received the diagnosis, I had already given up,” he says. “I could only sing a song or two before I would get tired. To be a singer, you have to do full shows. I was really down and not sure what I should be doing with my life.”

He continues, “I just decided to go to school—I’d been home schooling on and off. Ninth grade was my first full year of school. Then tenth grade I tried to be a normal kid, but I’m not good at extracurricular activities, and I felt like I had lost a piece of myself.”

The Idol Experience
Archuleta continued to attend school. And when he was 16, auditions for the seventh season of American Idol were announced. An avid fan of the show from the beginning, he was finally old enough to audition. But by that point, Archuleta had lost confidence in his abilities.

“I thought it would be a waste of everyone’s time if I auditioned,” he recalls. “I didn’t think I had a shot, and I didn’t know how my voice would handle it.”

Archuleta’s family and friends consistently encouraged him to audition. The idea nagged at him, so he finally decided to make it a matter of prayer. “Something kept saying, ‘Go audition,’” he says. “I kept trying to ignore it. So I was shocked that I felt such a strong impression [to audition] after praying. But I felt there was something I had to learn from that experience, maybe meet someone who I needed to meet.”

(LDS Living photo shoot, 2011. Photo by Michael Schoenfeld.)

With the help of his father, Archuleta began choosing music for the auditions, and in July 2007 the two of them boarded a plane to San Diego to join thousands of other hopefuls for the chance to impress the American Idol judges. Archuleta made it through several rounds, received unanimous approval from the judges to move forward to the semi-finals during Hollywood Week, and was ultimately chosen as one of the 24 contestants to compete on the show.

“The whole Idol experience was pretty crazy,” Archuleta says of his experience on the show. “For the most part it was a positive experience, but it was extremely challenging to believe in myself while dealing with all the pressure. I had so many eyes on me.”

Archuleta describes the American Idol experience as “boot camp for singers.” “For iTunes we had to record songs each week. There were interviews, photo shoots, and music videos for the Ford commercials. There were fan letters and paparazzi. We were competing in front of millions of people every week. I thought, ‘If I can make it through this, I can handle anything.’”

Despite the overwhelming pressure in the spotlight and a grueling schedule, Archuleta managed to set himself apart. After battling with fellow contestants for 13 weeks, he won a coveted spot in the finale, going head-to-head with the other finalist, David Cook. Archuleta gave spellbinding performances, wowing the audience and the judges with all three of his musical numbers. American Idol judge Simon Cowell even predicted that Archuleta would win the competition. But on May 21, 2008, after the show tallied more than 97 million votes, Cook ultimately walked away with the title of “American Idol”—and Archuleta was perfectly happy with the outcome.

“I knew I wasn’t going to win,” he says. “But it was a life-changing experience. I was able to learn so much—all because I followed a prompting to go audition.”

The Image Dilemma
Following American Idol, Archuleta signed a recording contract with Jive Records, and his self-titled album, David Archuleta, was released in November of 2008. It was certainly a dream come true, but behind the scenes, he was constantly clashing with the record label.

“Record label management wanted to make me into a person that was so different from who I had presented myself to be on Idol. People would say, ‘You don’t know who you are. You don’t know what you want to be. This is who you are.’ But I told them, ‘You know what? That’s not who I am. Regardless if that’s what will get more radio play, that’s not what I’m supposed to do. I don’t want double-meaning lyrics. I don’t want things to be taken the wrong way. Music has an impact, and as an artist I can influence the way people think, the way they feel. No one can tell me what I am and am not. I’m just going to be true to myself.’”

Archuleta’s tenacity paid off. His first single, “Crush,” debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and has sold nearly 2 million copies to date. But he readily admits that romance is not his favorite topic to sing about.

“I’ve never been in a relationship, but that’s what everyone wanted me to sing about—I was so frustrated by that. They would say, ‘That’s what people relate to.’ But I didn’t relate to it.”

In fact, Archuleta does not plan on changing his bachelor status any time soon. “Dating isn’t something I’m taking seriously right now,” he explains. “There are definitely more things musically and personally that I need to accomplish before I get into a relationship.”

But when he does start dating, what qualities will his ideal girl have? “I want someone who has good values, who values family, and who thinks about others a lot,” he says. “I want someone I can learn from, who likes exploring and trying new things, who likes to have fun, who likes to eat—I like food, and I hope she will too,” he laughs. “Just someone who has a good heart.”

David even has a song dedicated to that ideal girl on his third album, The Other Side of Down, called “My Kind of Perfect.” “It’s about who that girl is going to be down the road,” he explains. “I want to be myself, so this is my love song—wondering who that person is going to be.”

To read the rest of this article, check out the November/December print issue of LDS Living by purchasing a single issue here or a one-year subscription for the special price of $10 here.

To view our David Archuleta photo gallery, click here.

To check out some behind-the-scenes video from our photoshoot with David and for his responses to some of our reader questions, click here.

Have you ever wanted to sing in front of a crowd of thousands? Or share your best recipes with the entire nation? Do you think you could win a race around the globe because of your superb camping know-how? No matter the nature of your talent, there’s a reality show for your skills.

Not all reality shows match the standards of Latter-days Saints, but since the rise of reality TV, Mormons have been prominently featured in many—especially those of the talent variety. When the good, old-fashioned talent show becomes a national talent search, Mormons aren’t hiding their light under a bushel. The best and the brightest are lining up to prove that Mormons “got” talent.

One Mormon reality show contestant gained her own TV show from the experience. Kelsey Nixon competed on season four of The Next Food Network Star. After doing an internship on the set of Martha Stewart Living, Nixon knew she wanted to combine her talents for cooking and broadcast journalism into a show of her own, so she submitted an application for the show.

But Nixon was not selected the first time she applied. “Thank goodness I didn’t make it—I was not ready!” Nixon said. To further prepare, Nixon put together a cooking show while she was still at BYU, finished her degree, and then went to culinary school in Los Angeles.

After that, Nixon resubmitted her application and was selected. Although she didn’t win, Nixon now hosts her own show, Kelsey’s Essentials, on The Cooking Channel. The show’s second season begins on June 25.

While she credits her time on reality TV with getting her the show, Nixon said reality TV is not always a picnic.

“It’s a very, very hard thing to do, and you have to be prepared for that,” Nixon said. “It was actually the most stressful six weeks of my entire life. . . . Be prepared for a pretty grueling process.”

It’s impossible to list all the Latter-day Saints who have made appearances on reality TV, but many of them have made quite an impact. Ken Jennings made headlines when he became the longest-running contestant on the TV quiz show Jeopardy! Six participants on The Biggest Loser last season were LDS, including Olympic gold-medalist Rulon Gardner. One of the professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars, Chelsie Hightower, is a Mormon who rose to fame on another reality dancing show, So You Think You Can Dance? And beginning June 23, two Mormons will be racing across Morocco on the new reality series Expedition: Impossible.

Of all the talent reality shows, none is more well-known than American Idol. Plenty of Latter-day Saints have shared their vocal talents on the show over the last ten years. Carmen Rasmussen of Bountiful, Utah, was a finalist in season two. Season seven featured two LDS contestants, Brooke White and David Archuleta. And in season three there was BYU–Idaho student Jon Peter Lewis.

Lewis was considering medical school when the opportunity to audition for American Idol came up.

“When I came across American Idol, I thought here’s something that I can do really quickly,” Lewis said. “If it works out then awesome, and if it doesn’t . . . at least I can say I gave it a shot.” Lewis has now released three albums following his jumpstart to stardom on American Idol.

Performing on a national stage helped Lewis realize that his singing talents competed with many singers on the radio. But he did encounter some challenges while on American Idol.

“Probably the biggest challenge is going to church every week and having a calling,” Lewis said. “Not having a calling, actually, is a better way to put it. I didn’t have a calling for I can’t tell you how long.”

Even so, Lewis attended church as much as possible and tried to represent the Church while competing on the show.

“I decided early on in the show that I would rather live a sermon than preach one because I never thought that being on American Idol was a forum for preaching,” Lewis said. “But I did feel that you’re supposed to be a missionary wherever you are.”

Another reality contestant, Lindsey Stirling, felt that her time on America’s Got Talent was a unique way of sharing the gospel. Competing with her hip-hop violin routines, Stirling proudly proclaimed on the show that she was a Latter-day Saint.

“I was definitely the token Mormon of that season,” Stirling said with a chuckle.
But this returned missionary was serious when she said, “I honestly believe that the Lord is very creative in the way He does missionary work. . . . Even through reality TV, I had so many missionary opportunities in a venue that a lot of people see as corrupt and evil.”

So, why all the Mormons in reality TV? Lewis, Nixon and Stirling each had a few thoughts on the matter.

“I think that growing up in church we’re taught to explore and develop our talents but we’re also taught that [the music industry] is not a viable career option,” Lewis said. Lewis guessed that many Latter-day Saints try out for reality shows because they’ll know right away if they should keep pursuing their dream career or aim for a more mainstream line of work.

Nixon guessed that Mormons turn up on reality TV for very practical reasons: viewers will find us interesting.

“More than ever, people are interested in what we think, what we do,” Nixon said. When producers and casting directors are choosing from the pool of talent, they want a wide variety of people, Nixon explained, and Mormons are basically the opposite of the tattooed biker type.

“When you decide to go on to a reality show, there are just certain things that you have to accept,” Nixon said. “They’re going to turn you into a character and hopefully that character will represent what you actually are.”

Stirling’s guess: “It’s because we’re different and we’re not afraid to be different,” she said. “For some reason the world is fascinated with Mormonism.”

How many of you have heard a song by David Archuleta? How many of you have seen David Archuleta perform live? I don’t know which word describes him better: darling or adorable. He fits both.

This past weekend, I got to spend a couple of hours with David (my coworkers and I call him Davie) at the BYU Book Festival on BYU’s campus. David was invited to be interviewed live on the importance of books and reading in his life. He spoke in front of a crowd of 100 or so and couldn’t have been more genuine. He mentioned in passing that one of his favorite books is The Alchemist, which I thought was very interesting. (Librarians: you might want to have a couple extra copies of The Alchemist on file—you’re going to have a large group of 14-year-old girls coming your way.)

After his interview, David made his way inside (yes, past the screaming girls) to the bookstore where he was signing his book and CDs. He’s 20 and he’s already written a book. Amazing. During the signing, my job was to walk through the line and write “To:” names on yellow sticky notes so David wouldn’t have to ask how to spell the names. I had an absolute blast. I’ve never written so many girls names in the space of two hours. But you want to know what the best part was? Crouching down (I’m 5’10”) and asking the little girls if they were excited to see David, and take a picture of him. Oh heavens, I wish I could have recorded some of their reactions—totally priceless. There was one little girl—Hannah, nine years old with a mouthful of braces -who, out of excitement, couldn’t have smiled any bigger. I melted. I watched Hannah go through the line and get an individual picture with David where he put his arm around her shoulder. I think her smile is now permanent.

Major props to David Archuleta for being such a great “crush” for nine-year-old girls. He’s got some adorable fans from Provo, UT.

Mormon Life says: This is written by Michael Otterson, Head of Public Affairs for the Church.

In my line of work, I get to read what a lot of people say about my church.

Every day, news media reports mentioning The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or “Mormons” cross my desk, many from remote parts of the world. Since the advent of the Internet the number has increased exponentially, especially in the US.

We’re not alone. Many of my counterparts in other large churches feel the spotlight on their faiths. But over the past few years something singular has been happening in conversations about Mormons.
Sister Elaine S. Dalton, Young Women general president, came to Los Angeles literally running to start a conference for young women on Feb 4-5...

More than 1,000 young women from 14 Los Angeles area stakes gathered the next morning in Glendale for the general session of the conference. A choir, made up of 60 young women from the La Crescenta California Stake, was led by Jessica Sheen.

Diana Hoelscher, a returned missionary and mother of four from San Antonio, Texas, was first to address the gathering. Soon, a surprise visitor — former American Idol finalist and popular LDS singer, David Archuleta — was introduced as a guest speaker and singer.
