Mexico holds a special place in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The first Mormon missionaries to visit Mexico in 1876 found a people ready to hear the gospel, and in 2004 Mexico became the first country outside the United States to reach a membership of 1,000,000 Latter-day Saints.

Visiting Puebla, Mexico City, and Monterrey in April 2012, Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles counseled members, leaders, and missionaries in various meetings.

In the “land of eternal spring,” the people of Guatemala are being taught “how to fish.” This summer Family Humanitarian experience, known as FHe, will carry out its first expedition to the remote Polochic Region. FHe provides families and singles over 40 the opportunity to work alongside villagers to present them an opportunity to become self-sufficient and also share in the spiritual experiences that come through service.

The story behind the launch of FHe is also spiritual. In 2010, Tyler DeLange, an emergency medicine physician in the Washington, D.C., area, had the strong impression that an organization should be established that would allow families to serve together in developing countries throughout the world. David and Michaela Shirley of Texas also felt the urgency that they needed to dedicate their time to humanitarian service. They read an article in the Deseret News about Singular Humanitarian experience, known as SHe, international humanitarian service projects for Mormon singles, and in Novermber 2010 contacted DeLange, who told them about his vision.

A Guatemalan nonprofit group founded by Mormons is using a USAID grant to expand its infant nutritional feeding program.

Workers at Casa de Sion (House of Zion) will be giving Nutributter, a peanut-based supplement enhanced with vitamins and minerals, to all infants between the ages of 6 months and 24 months in a number of very impoverished communities in the highlands.

The United Nations has classified this area as one of the top four regions in the world affected by chronic malnutrition. Both physical and mental stunting is common.

For thousands of Guatemalan Latter-day Saints, President Dieter F. Uchtdorf's recent visit here marked a pivotal moment in this country's rich Church history.
The second counselor in the First Presidency traveled to Guatemala last month to dedicate the Church's 136th temple in the highland city of Quetzaltenango. That event was met with joy as thousands gathered at the temple site to participate in the opening of the temple and other dedicatory events. But President Uchtdorf's time in Guatemala was not limited to the Dec. 11 temple dedication. The Church leader, along with Elder Neil L. Andersen of the Quorum of the Twelve and other Church leaders, also visited with scores of Guatemalan members in local meetinghouses and at an outdoor youth conference.

Most maps identify Guatemala's second-largest city as Quetzaltenango. But ask a native from this highland community to name their hometown and they will likely answer "Xela" — the Mayan name that existed centuries before the arrival of the Spaniards.

Indeed, Quetzaltenango (or Xela) is synonymous with cultural tradition. Many of the women still dress in the colorful wide skirts and woven blouses favored by their ancestors. Others can comfortably speak both Spanish and local indigenous languages such as K'iche'.
