Visiting the Dominican Republic in mid-February, 2012, Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles brought a message of love and instruction to priesthood leaders, members, and young single adults.

“You are participating in history tonight,” Elder Bednar told young single adults from the Dominican Republic and 28 other countries as he began his address to them from the pulpit of the institute building in Santo Domingo on Saturday, February 18, 2012.

They say that family history is catching. If the increase of family history-related events around the globe is any indication, this is one bug that is spreading far and wide.

For instance, on October 29, 2011, the San Gerónimo stake of the Dominican Republic held the first Church-sponsored family history conference in the country at a local meetinghouse. Both Latter-day Saints and community members were invited to the event to learn about the importance of family history and genealogy.

A day of service, two devotionals, two clinics and dodging a swarm of killer bees were all part of BYU baseball's trip to the Dominican Republic in November.

Cheered on by crowds of locals and Church missionaries, the BYU team won all four games against Dominican club teams run by the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals on the tour permitted by the NCAA.

The newest family history center has opened in Puerto Rico, and local television station WAPA-TV provided viewers with a tour of the new facility in a recent news story. The center is located in the law school of the Interamericana University and opens to the public on Saturday, 14 May.

Genealogy enthusiasts know the Family History Library in Salt Lake City is a treasure-trove of ancestral information. But not everyone can travel to Utah’s capital city and spend days or weeks searching for family from past generations.

At age 18, Reyes lost both of her legs when a car lost control and hit her as she stood in front of her house. Because the DR doesn’t have accessibility laws to help those with mobility impairments, it was difficult for her to get around in a wheelchair. Then she discovered Innovación Ortopédica, a prosthetic clinic that partners with Latter-day Saint Charities.

I came from the street, and I know what it’s like.”

When Pastor Peña called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for help, LDS Charities partnered with Food for the Poor (an interdenominational Christian relief organization) and the Catholic Church in Santo Domingo to bring boxes of clothes, toys, food, and other basics for the children.
