If BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall had his way, the Cougars would be playing a Football Championship Subdivision opponent, like Idaho State, early in the season, not in the middle.

BYU is in its first season of independence, and the school had just a few months to put together the 2011 schedule. The Cougars take on the Bengals on Saturday.

Next season, BYU is scheduled to face FCS foe Weber State in the second game of the year, on Sept. 8, 2012.

BYU-Utah game turned into 'Irrelevant Bowl'

Mormon Life says: What do you think, football fans? Is this year's rivalry game kind of pointless?

Way back in ancient times (OK, 2010), BYU-Utah week was a period of fear and loathing. The block U and Brother Brigham's statue were on high security alert. Players were held up to criticism and comparison all year. Announcers and even beat writers covering the teams were subject to taunts and occasional threats.

The buildup and letdown was nearly unbearable. Practically everyone involved in the game admitted that losing meant a year of abject misery. But that's not the case anymore. Look around. There's definitely interest, but you won't find nearly as many people losing sleep. There's too much territory ahead.

So welcome to the 2011 Irrelevant Bowl. Winner gets ... um ... er ... a week's worth of satisfaction.

Mormon Life says: Some may not know, but Utah's coach, Kyle Whittingham, is also LDS.

A year ago, BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall called his relationship with Utah coach Kyle Whittingham cordial and professional in a Salt Lake Tribune article outlining the feelings between the two coaches, who both started their head coaching careers in 2005.

Utah’s move to the Pac-12 and BYU’s dalliance with independence has done nothing to change that, Mendenhall said Monday in his weekly news conference as the Cougars and Utes prepared to battle Saturday (7:15 p.m., ESPN2) at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

“ ‘Professional’ is the best way to describe it. It really doesn’t go beyond that. I think we both tried early on but then realized I wasn’t LaVell [Edwards, a former BYU coach], and he wasn’t [former Utah coach] Ron McBride,” Mendenhall said.

Why does BYU football coach Bronco Mendenhall wear that nylon T-shirt during football games? On national TV, can't he go with a nice golf shirt, white or blue with trim? Heck, some coaches wear bow ties and vests.

Is Bronco dressing down?

Inquiring minds wanted to know this week. I got requests to find out why.

Well the short answer is that Mendenhall often does things that are symbolic, the deed or object represents something he believes is important.
