José A. Moscão was noticing a trend: the youth who were coming to the Campinas Brazil Temple had a lot of “down time.”

Brother Moscão, the director of the family history center located adjacent to the Campinas Temple, knew that because of the distance many youth had to travel to get to the temple, most came in caravans and stayed for several days. The time between their sessions in the baptistry and meals and waiting for their parents and leaders who were participating in other temple ordinances couldn’t be avoided.

But maybe, he thought—or rather, he felt—he could offer the youth an alternative to wandering the temple grounds whenever they had some free time.

So he did.

The first known members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) in Brazil were two German families who immigrated to Brazil — one in 1913 and the other in 1923. During the decade that followed, others joined the Church, and the first congregation was organized in Joinville in 1930.

By the end of the 1950s, the number of Church members totaled 3,700. Today, more than 1.1 million Latter-day Saints live in Brazil.

On Saturday, March 10, 2012, 21 people—including both families and individuals—entered the waters of baptism. This is the largest number of people in recent years in the Brazilian states of Para and Amapá, both part of the Brazil Belém Mission, to receive the ordinance of baptism on the same day and to become “fellowcitizens” with the Saints (Ephesians 2:19), and walk “in newness of life” (Romans 6:4).
