This sharing time will help the children learn about the blessings they receive when they keep the commandments of God.

Preparation: Familiarize yourself with the following stories/scriptures: Daniel refusing the King’s wine (Daniel 1:5-16); the Stripling Warriors (Alma 53:16-21; 56:44-56; 58:39); The children of Israel and the Brass Serpent (Numbers 21:6-9; John 3:14-15); and the Nephites listening to King Benjamin and covenanting to keep the commandments (Mosiah 5:1-6; 6:7; 7:1).

Get the following pictures: Daniel Refusing the King's Wine (Gospel Art Book 23 or Gospel Art Kit 114), Two Thousand Young Warriors (GAB 80 or GAK 313), Moses and the Brass Serpent (GAB 16 of GAK 123), and King Benjamin (GAB 74 or GAK 307).

Presentation: Explain to the children that commandments are the rules or laws that Heavenly Father wants us to live by. We find the commandments in the scriptures, or by listening to the prophet. We show our love for Jesus Christ by obeying the commandments. When we obey the commandments the Lord gives us many blessings.

Explain that you are going to tell them some stories, after each story they will play a game.

Show them the picture of Daniel and his friends. Briefly tell the story. Explain that we now call the commandment that Daniel was obeying the Word of Wisdom (see Doctrine and Covenants, section 89). Ask what blessings Daniel received from obeying this commandment (knowledge, strength, good health).

Play "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" as you give the following examples. Have the children point their thumbs up if the example is one of obeying the commandment and point their thumbs down if the example is not obeying.

Sam eats fruit and vegetables and other healthy foods.

Brett's friends find a can of beer while walking home from school. They decide to try it.

Julie eats more cookies, candy, and soda than good food.

Brittlyn has decided to never smoke.

Jolynn goes outside and gets lots of exercise.

Testify to the children that you know they will also receive blessings if they obey this commandment.

Sing "The Lord Gave me a Temple," Children's Songbook, p. 153.

Show them the picture of the Stripling Warriors. Briefly tell them the story emphasizing the young men listened to their mothers and knew their words were true. Explain that this is an example of honoring their fathers and mothers (Ten Commandments #6 and Gospel Standard # 7). Ask what blessings these warriors received from obeying the commandments (the Lord protected them from being killed).

Play "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" as you give the following examples.

Peter always comes when his mother calls, even if he is having fun playing.

Sarah helps her mother with the dishes.

Brian watches TV when his father asks him to clean his room.

Cami argues about going to bed.

Rachel loves to read the scriptures with her mother and father each night.

Testify that you know they will also receive blessings if they obey this commandment.

Sing "Quickly I'll Obey," Children's Songbook, p. 197.

Show them the picture of Moses and the Brass Serpent. Tell them that the children of Israel became discouraged and spake against Moses and God. The Lord sent fiery serpents among the people and they bit them and many died. Explain that Moses was told to make a brass serpent, put it on a pole and place it where the people could see it. The Lord promised that everyone that had been bitten would live if they looked at the serpent. Jesus taught that this is a lesson for us about the importance of looking to the Savior and his atoning sacrifice. (Sacramental covenants, D&C 20:77). Ask what blessings the Israelites received by doing this (they lived).

Play "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" as you give the following examples.

Jason listens to the Sacrament prayers and thinks about Jesus when he takes the bread and water.

Jamie wants to play video games instead of having Family Home Evening.

Andrew loves to read the scriptures.

Alex complains that church is always boring.

Caleb likes to learn the songs and sing in Primary.

Testify that you know they will also receive blessings if they learn about Jesus and think of him often.

Sing "To Think About Jesus," Children's Songbook, p. 71.

Show the picture of King Benjamin. Tell them about the Nephite people that listened to King Benjamin speak and covenanted to be obedient in all things. They always kept the Sabbath day holy. (Ten Commandments #5, Gospel Standards #6). Ask what blessings the Nephites received by doing this (continual peace in the land).

Play "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" as you give the following examples.

Kyle visits his grandparents after church on Sunday.

Ashley chose to play in a soccer tournament on Sunday.

Brandon slept late and didn’t go to church.

Becca goes to Sacrament meeting and takes the bread and water to remind her of Jesus.

Emma likes to go to Primary to learn about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

Testify that you know they will also receive blessings if they obey this commandment.

Sing "Keep the Commandments," Children's Songbook, p. 146.

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will help the children strengthen their testimonies of Jesus Christ.

Preparation:
Obtain several Gospel Art Kit or Gospel Art Book pictures depicting the life and miracles of Jesus Christ (suggested images: Birth of Christ, Announcement of Christ's Birth to the Shepherds, Flight into Egypt, Jesus and the Fishermen, Christ Walking on Water, Jesus Raising Lazarus, The Ten Lepers, Jesus Blessing Jairus's Daughter, Stilling the Storm, Healing the Blind, Praying in Gethsemane, The Empty Tomb, Mary and the Resurrected Lord, Resurrected Lord with the Eleven Apostles). These pictures can be printed from lds.org. Post the pictures around the room.

Obtain chalk or markers to write on the board.

Presentation:
Tell the children that you need their help to remember some of the miracles that Jesus Christ performed. Tell them that you are going to make a list on the board as they think about and remember the things that he did. Ask them to raise their hand if they can think of a miracle. (Point out the pictures you have posted, in case they need some reminders.) When a miracle is mentioned, have the children help you briefly retell the story, prompt them for more details if needed.

Possible miracle/story ideas:
Birth of Christ: Jesus' birth was a miracle, since he was the child of Mary and Heavenly Father.

Announcement of Christ's Birth to the Shepherds: Angels told shepherds that Jesus had been born.

Flight into Egypt: The Lord warned Joseph in a dream that Jesus' life was in danger and to leave and go to Egypt. After Herod died an angel told Joseph that they could return to Israel.

Jesus and the Fishermen:
The fishermen had worked all night without catching any fish. When Jesus came he told them to lower their nets again and the nets were filled with fish.

Christ Walking on Water: Christ walked across the water to a boat where the apostles were. Peter tried walking on the water too. He was able to walk a few steps, but began to sink when his faith wavered. Jesus saved him.

Jesus Raising Lazarus: After Lazarus had died and had been placed in a tomb, Jesus called him forth and he returned to life.

The Ten Lepers: Ten lepers came to Jesus and asked to be healed. He told them to show themselves to the priest. When they did, they were cleansed. One returned to thank Jesus.

Blessing Jairus's Daughter: A ruler named Jairus had a very sick daughter. He asked Jesus to come and heal her. The daughter died before they could arrive, but Jesus blessed her and she returned to life.

Stilling the Storm: Jesus and the apostles were on a ship. Jesus fell asleep. A terrible storm came up and the apostles were afraid that the boat would sink and they would be killed. They awoke Jesus and he commanded the storm to stop. Immediately the rain and wind stopped and the sea was calm.

Healing the Blind Man: Jesus saw a man who had been blind all his life. Jesus spat on the ground and made mud from the dirt. He put the mud on the man's eyes. After washing the mud off, the man was able to see.

Praying in Gethsemane: As Jesus prayed in Gethsemane he performed the greatest miracle of all. He suffered for all our sins so we can return to live with Heavenly Father again.

The Empty Tomb: An angel appeared to the soldiers that were guarding Jesus' tomb, the soldiers fell down in fear and the angel rolled the stone away from the door of the tomb.

Mary and the Resurrected Lord: After Jesus died, he was resurrected and appeared to Mary. Jesus made it possible for each of us to be resurrected and live again after we die.

Resurrected Lord with the Eleven Apostles: After Jesus was resurrected, he appeared to his apostles. He taught them to become the new leaders in the church. Then Jesus ascended into heaven.

As appropriate, sing Primary songs to reinforce the concepts taught, such as "He Sent His Son," (Children's Songbook, p. 34); "Tell Me the Stories of Jesus," (CS, p. 57); "Did Jesus Really Live Again?" (CS, p. 64); and "When He Comes Again," (CS, p. 82).

Point to the list you have made, tell the children that these were some of the miracles that Jesus did when He lived on earth. Explain that Jesus Christ's power is again on the earth (the priesthood) and miracles can still happen today. Bear your testimony of Jesus and help the children feel Christ's love for them.

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will engage the children in an activity that will help them think more about Jesus Christ's perfect example.

Preparation: Gather the following Gospel Art Kit pictures:

242-Jesus and His Mother

206-Childhood of Jesus Christ

205-Boy Jesus in the Temple

216-Christ and the Children

208-John the Baptist Baptizing Jesus

226-Jesus Washing the Apostles' Feet

212-Sermon on the Mount

214-Stilling the Storm

225-The Last Supper

227-Jesus Praying in Gethsemane

Familiarize yourself with the information on the back of the pictures. Post the pictures at the front of the room before the children arrive.

Presentation: Ask the children to look carefully at the pictures posted on the board.

Tell the children that you are now going to play a game. Choose one child to leave the room and another child to remove one picture from the board. Place the picture that was removed inside a folder or large envelope and rearrange the others on the board. Invite the child who left the room to return and identify which picture is missing.

After the child has determined which picture is missing, hold it up for everyone to see. Briefly review what is happening in the picture and ask the children what we can do to follow Jesus' example. Accept their responses, as you help guide them to understand the principle being taught. After the discussion replace the picture on the board and repeat with other pictures (make sure the children only pick each picture once). Occasionally you may want to sing a song to help reinforce the concept being taught.

Suggested things we can learn from each picture:

242. Treat our mothers with love and respect.

206. Learn new skills. Treat our fathers with love and respect.

205. Be willing to learn from and teach others.

216. Remember that everyone is important and worthy of our love.

208. Be baptized.

226. Be willing to serve others, even when it requires humility on our part.

223. Teach others about the gospel.

214. Exercise faith in difficult situations.

225. Remember Jesus as we partake of the sacrament.

227. Pray to our Heavenly Father. Do the will of Heavenly Father.

Possible songs could include, "I'm Trying to Be like Jesus" (Children's Songbook, 78), "Jesus Once Was a Little Child" (CS, 55), "Jesus Said Love Everyone" (CS, 61), "He Sent His Son" (CS, 34), and "Baptism" (CS, 100).

Express your testimony and love of the Savior and reemphasize the importance of following his example.

Mormon Life says: "The Holy Ghost is our true, eternal friend." - Children's Songbook, p.105

This sharing time will help the children think about the truth and comfort they can receive from the Holy Ghost.

Preparation: On a large sheet of cardstock or poster board write "The Holy Ghost is our true, eternal friend." ("The Holy Ghost," Children's Songbook, p. 105). Cut the poster into six puzzle pieces. Write one of the following scripture references on the back of each puzzle piece: D&C 39:33, John 14:16, D&C 9:8, Matthew 3:16-17, D&C 31:11, and John 14:26. Familiarize yourself with each scripture.

Collect a small gift box, a quilt or blanket, a candle, a picture of a dove, a compass, and a picture of a teacher. Attach the corresponding puzzle piece to each item (see below).

Presentation: Ask the children if they have ever felt frightened. Ask them if they have ever been confused about what they should do. Ask them if they have ever felt unsure if something was true. Explain that the Holy Ghost can help us in all of these situations.

Tell them they are going to learn more about the Holy Ghost and share it with each other. Divide the primary into six groups (make sure there is at least one leader or teacher with each group). Give each group one of the puzzle pieces and attached item. Ask each group to read the scripture on the puzzle piece together and decide how the item or picture can represent the Holy Ghost. Ask them to think of a story from the scriptures or their own experiences to share concerning the Holy Ghost. Give the groups five minutes to read and discuss.

Gift. D&C 39:33: "And again, it shall come to pass that on as many as ye shall baptize with water, ye shall lay your hands, and they shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Quilt. John 14:16: "And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever."

Candle. D&C 9:8: "But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right."

Picture of a Dove. Matthew 3:16–17: "And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

Compass. D&C 31:11: "Go your way whithersoever I will, and it shall be given you by the Comforter what you shall do and whither you shall go."

Picture of a teacher. John 14:26 "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."

Ask the first group to bring up their puzzle piece and post it on the board. Have them show their item and share what they learned about the Holy Ghost. Ask one person to tell a story or experience. Repeat with the remaining groups.

After the puzzle pieces have been put together, have all the children repeat the phrase on the poster. Tell them that this is a line from a song about the Holy Ghost. Have all the children sing the song "The Holy Ghost," Children's Songbook, p. 105.

Summarize how the Holy Ghost can help us and bear testimony that this is true. Sing additional songs about the Holy Ghost as time allows, such as "The Gift of the Holy Ghost," Friend, Aug 2005, 24-25; "Listen, Listen," Children's Songbook, p. 107; or "The Still Small Voice," Children's Songbook, p. 106.

Tell them they are going to play a game. Show them the game cube. Tell them that green represents faith, yellow represents repentance, blue represents baptism, and white represents the Holy Ghost.

Have children take turns rolling the game cube. After the child rolls a color have them select one of the sheets of that color from the table or floor. If it is a scripture help the child read it, if it is a song have all the children sing it, if it is a picture post it on the board. Briefly discuss the scripture, song, or picture and help the children understand more about the principle or ordinance.

Continue playing until all the sheets are used or time is up. If a child rolls a color that is gone, have them roll again.

Bear testimony that our Heavenly Father has a wonderful plan for us. The principles and ordinances of the gospel help us follow that plan so that we can live with Him.

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will help the children learn about the Restoration of the gospel.

Preparation: Get a shallow box that has a lid (a plastic box with a snap on lid would be ideal). Fill it with sand or clean kitty litter. Obtain a tiny garden trowel or rake, or a plastic spoon and fork.

Find a number of small rocks (2 to 3 inches). Print the scripture references below on small strips of paper and tape one to each rock. Bury the rocks in the sand. Gather pictures to represent each scripture. Notify the pianist and music leader of any songs you'd like to sing.

Presentation: Explain to the children that when Christ was on the earth the people had a fullness of the gospel. After Jesus and the Apostles died many of the truths of the gospel were lost. Joseph Smith restored (or brought back) the fullness of the gospel that they had during the time of Christ.

Tell the children that an archeologist is someone who digs in the ground to find evidence of people or animals that lived a long time ago. Tell them that you are going to pretend to be archeologists and try to discover some gospel blessings, principles, or ordinances that have been restored.

Invite a child come dig in your box with the trowel or utensils. When they find a rock, have them dig it up and find the scripture reference on the rock. Look up the scripture and have a child read it or repeat it after you (Note: some scriptures only require a portion of the verse to be read--see below). Have all the children listen carefully so they can discover what part of the gospel the scripture is about. Show the picture(s) that illustrate that topic. Occasionally sing a song that reinforces the gospel principle.

Scriptures. Doctrine and Covenants 42:12. (And again, the elders, priests and teachers of this church shall teach the principles of my gospel, which are in the Bible and the Book of Mormon, in the which is the fulness of the gospel.) Possible picture: GAK 617.

Priesthood. Joseph Smith--History 1:69. (Upon you my fellow servants, in the name of Messiah, I confer the Priesthood of Aaron.) Possible pictures: GAK 407; GAK 408; GAK 613; GAB 93; GAB 94; GAB 106. Possible song: "The Priesthood is Restored," Children's Songbook, p. 89.

Baptism. Mark 1:9. (And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.) Possible pictures: GAK 208; GAK 601; GAB 35; GAB 104. Possible song: "Baptism," Children's Songbook, p. 100

Gift of the Holy Ghost. Doctrine and Covenants 33:15. (And whoso having faith you shall confirm in my church, by the laying on of the hands, and I will bestow the gift of the Holy Ghost upon them.) Possible pictures: GAK 602; GAB 105.

Apostles. Luke 6:13. (And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles.) Possible pictures: GAK 211; GAK 506; GAB 38; GAB 122–137.

Temples. John 8:2. (And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him.) Possible pictures: GAK 118; GAK 502; GAB 52; GAB 119. Possible song: "I Love to See the Temple," Children's Songbook, p. 95.

Sacrament. Matthew 26:26. (And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.) Possible pictures: GAK 225; GAK 603; GAB 54; GAB 107.

Missionaries. Mark 16:15. (And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.) Possible pictures: GAK 209; GAK 612; GAB 37; GAB 109–110.

Revelation. Galatians 1:12. (For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.) Possible pictures: GAK 107; GAK 113; GAB 13; GAB 14; GAB 22. Possible song: "The Ninth Article of Faith," Children's Songbook, p. 128.

Testify that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith, and that Joseph did translate the Book of Mormon and restore the fullness of the gospel. Sing "The Church of Jesus Christ," Children's Songbook, p. 77.

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will teach the children about the important messages general authorities share with us.

This sharing time will involve the children as they learn messages from some of the General Authorities of the Church.

Preparation:
Obtain copies of the Friend magazine articles mentioned or make copies of the synopses below. Gather six simple visual aids: a Book of Mormon; a basketball; a picture of a piano; a picture of a train; a picture of an Olympic runner; a picture of a child praying.

Presentation:
Tell the children they are going to help each other learn about things the General Authorities have taught us. Divide the children into groups. Make sure a teacher or other leader is in each group. Give the groups a visual aid and the accompanying Friend magazine article. Give them a few minutes to read the story and decide how to teach it to the other children.

Let each group present the information from their article.

1. "The Promises of a Prophet" by Elder Octaviano Tenorio, Friend, Apr 2009, 8-9. (Book of Mormon)
In the April 1986 general conference, President Ezra Taft Benson (1899-1994) promised that if families would read the scriptures together regularly, the Spirit would fill their homes.

My dear wife and I decided to follow that counsel. We set a goal to read a chapter a day from the Book of Mormon with our three children--Jorge, 10; Susi, 9; and Luis, 3. We read every day, each of us reading one verse at a time. Even though Luis could not yet read, he wanted to participate. He sat on my lap, facing me, with the Book of Mormon between us. When it was my turn to read, we both followed my finger as I pointed to each word, and Luis repeated out loud every word I read while he looked at those words upside down.

Just before he turned five years old, Luis asked, "When is it my turn to read?"

We explained that when he was older, he would go to school and learn to read.

He responded, "I already know how to read!"

Astonished, I handed him a Book of Mormon. He opened the book upside down and began to read perfectly. He had learned to read by following along in the Book of Mormon!

I invite you to read the scriptures every day. If possible, read them with your family.

2. "Two Secrets to Happiness," by Elder Larry W. Gibbons, Friend, Feb 2009, 8-9. (Basketball)
Another way to be happy is to learn self-control. When I was younger, I loved to play basketball. But I did not have good sportsmanship. Winning was everything to me. Whenever someone fouled me, I would get angry.

Then I learned that basketball is only a game. I decided to change. One day, someone elbowed me in the chest on purpose. He pushed me hard. In the past, I would have gotten angry, but this time I walked away without saying anything. I had the best feeling. I knew that I had learned to control myself. It felt better than winning!

Be a good sport, and learn self-control. As you do, you will be happier.

3. "Playing the Hymns," by Elder Lowell M. Snow, Friend, May 2009, 8-9. (Piano)
When I was nine years old, my mother announced that she wanted me to learn to play the piano. I thought there were better things for a nine-year-old boy to do, like riding my horse or roaming the hills behind our home. But I did not want to disappoint my mother, so I agreed to take piano lessons.

Every week my piano teacher gave me a new song to learn. I didn't like to practice, but every day Mother set the timer to make sure I practiced the right amount of time. After a few months, my mother suggested that I learn to play some of the Church hymns. I agreed, and together we chose a hymn and I practiced playing it before my lesson. After that, my piano teacher assigned a new hymn for me to learn every week, along with the other music I practiced.

By the time I turned 12 years old, I could play most of the familiar hymns in the hymnbook.

When I was ordained a deacon, the bishop taught me about the priesthood and that one of the things a deacon did was serve others. The bishop knew I had learned to play the hymns, so he called me to be a pianist during some of our church meetings. I enjoyed playing the hymns during our meetings. It made me feel that I could make a contribution to our worship services. Even as a young boy, I felt like an important part of the Church because I knew our ward needed me.

I will always be grateful to my mother for encouraging me and helping me learn to play the hymns. The sacred music would speak to my mind and my heart, and that the words and music would become familiar friends to bless me throughout my life.

4. "Courage to Live the Gospel," by Elder Erich W. Kopischke, Friend, Mar 2009, 8-9. (Train)
My father, Kurt, was a young boy in Poland during World War II. The gospel of Jesus Christ helped them feel brave through difficult times.

[As he got older] My father was very bright, and he wanted to study at a university. At that time the government where he lived chose who could attend universities and who could not. The government did not want people to believe in God. Dad was told that he could attend the university only if he would stop belonging to the Church and talking about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

My father knew he could not give up his faith. Instead, he and my mother, Helga, decided to leave their home. They boarded a train for West Germany, praying that they would be allowed to enter that country. At the border the police officers checking the trains did not check the compartment where my parents were riding. So they were able to begin a new life in a country where they could worship God. Two months later I was born.

Sometimes [others] may want you to do things you know are not right. Never forget your promise to live Heavenly Father's standards. Your courage to do what is right will make a difference!

5. "Strength to Follow the Lord," by Elder Claudio D. Zivic, Friend, Jun 2009, 8-9. (Olympic Runner)
Running was one of my favorite activities when I was young. I was on the track and field team, and my specialty was the 800-meter dash. That meant I ran two laps around the track.

My dream was to be in the Olympics. My trainer had been an Olympic athlete. He thought I was talented enough to go to the Olympics if I practiced hard.

I practiced a lot and ran in many races. When I was 15, I was the second-place champion for my category in the whole country of Argentina. I hoped that if I continued working, perhaps I could go to the Olympics.

But there was a problem. Often our races were on Sunday. Soon I realized that I could not continue competing. So I chose to stop running.

The choice was hard. I had to give up my dream of being in the Olympics. My trainer didn't understand why I stopped. But I knew I had made a good decision. Even though sports are a good thing, choosing to follow the Lord and His Church is better.

Never be afraid to tell people what you believe in and what your standards are. You don't need to hide who you are. I know the Lord will bless you when you are courageous enough to follow Him.

6. "Praying and Singing to Heavenly Father," by Elder Michael John U. Teh, Friend, Jul 2009, 8-9. (Praying)
When I was a little boy, I used to lose things. I would look all around, but I couldn’t find them. After going through the house two or three times without finding anything, I would pray to Heavenly Father to help me. When I started looking again, I would find what I was missing. That happened to me several times as a child. Those times helped me learn to trust that Heavenly Father hears and answers my prayers.

When I was older, my testimony was strengthened as Heavenly Father answered my prayers. Heavenly Father never fails you.

I know I'm a child of God. I've always known it. Even when I make mistakes, He is loving and generous to me. He pours out blessings upon you. There's no doubt about it. He knows me. He loves me. I am His son.

Like me, you are a child of our Father in Heaven. He's always there. He loves you.

After each group has presented their article, explain that the General Authorities of the Church have wonderful messages for us. Remind the children that they can find these messages in the Friend magazine as well as hear them at General Conference. Bear your testimony of these leaders and their messages.

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will help the children better understand the Savior's life and sacrifice.

Preparation:
Obtain the DVD Lamb of God, (item #54586090, available from the Church's distribution center or in the Ward's library) and a DVD player and television. Familiarize yourself with the suggested sections of the video and questions (select the sections best suited to the children in your Primary).

Presentation:
Tell the children they are going to watch a movie about Jesus Christ. Explain that you will stop it and ask some questions a few times and they should watch closely so they can be ready to answer.

Show Chapter 2 of the DVD (Scenes from the life of Christ and the Last Supper -- approximately three minutes long)

Engage the children in a discussion about the video. Ask the following questions:

What were some of the things Jesus did? (Heal, teach, give sacrament, wash feet)

What did Jesus tell the disciples the bread and wine represented? (Him and His blood)

How do you think the disciples felt when Jesus washed their feet?

Show Chapter 6 of the DVD (Golgotha -- approximately five minutes long)

Again, discuss the video by asking some questions:

What did they do to Jesus?

What happened when Jesus died? (Storm and earthquake)

What happened to Jesus' body? (Placed in a tomb and covered with cloth)

Show Chapter 7 of the DVD (Tomb -- approximately two minutes long)

Once more, discuss the video by asking questions, such as:

Why was the tomb empty when Mary Magdalene went there?

Were the apostles happy or sad?

Testify that the Savior atoned for our sins (made it possible for us to repent and return to Heavenly Father) by suffering in Gethsemane and by giving His life on the cross. Express your love for Him and help the children feel His love for them.

Mormon Life says: This sharing time will help the children recognize the power of music and help them learn more about the Godhead.

Preparation:
On a sheet of poster paper make a series of rules and treble and bass clefs to make it look like three or four music staffs. Cut out the shape of a musical note from black or colored paper. Place the note on the bottom line of the poster. Ask the pianist to be prepared to play the songs you have selected or obtain the Children's Songbook CDs and a CD player.

Presentation:
Explain to the children that music is a wonderful way to learn the gospel. Tell them it is easier for them to remember what they have learned when they sing about it, and what they learn from the songs will help them when they are grown and become leaders of the Church and the world. (See page iii of the Children's Songbook.)

Show the children the musical poster board. Explain that they want to reach the top and the way they can do that is to listen carefully to some musical clues. Play "name that tune" by having the pianist play the first few notes of a primary song (or playing the first few notes on the CD). Have the children raise their hand when they know what song is being played. When the children correctly identify the song, move the musical note up to the next line on the poster.

Have the children sing the song (have the words written on a large sheet of paper if they are less familiar with that song), then ask them which member of the Godhead they learn about in that song. When they name one, move the note up an additional line.

Include songs such as those listed below or other songs the children in your ward are familiar with. Many of the songs talk about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, so either answer could be correct.

Heavenly Father: "First Article of Faith" (Children's Songbook, 122), "He Sent His Son" (CS, 34), "Teach Me to Walk in the Light" (CS, 177), "My Heavenly Father Loves Me" (CS, 228).

Jesus Christ: "Away in a Manger" (CS, 42), "Did Jesus Really Live Again" (CS, 64), "I Feel My Savior's Love" (CS, 74), "I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus" (CS, 78), "Tell Me the Stories of Jesus" (CS, 57).

Holy Ghost: "Listen, Listen" (CS, 107), "Holy Ghost" (CS, 105), "Still Small Voice" (CS, 106).

Bear testimony of your love for our Father in Heavenly and His Son, Jesus Christ. Help the children understand and feel of their love for them.

This sharing time will engage the children in an activity to help them remember some stories of Jesus' life.

Preparation: Obtain two copies of the following pictures (make photo copies or print from lds.org): Gospel Art Kit 200 or 201, The Nativity; GAK 242, Jesus and His Mother; GAK 208, Baptism of Jesus; GAK 214, Stilling the Storm; GAK 213, Healing the Blind Man; GAK 225, The Last Supper; GAK 227, Jesus Praying; GAK 233, The Resurrected Lord.

Mount each picture on colored paper. Using magnets or push pins post them, in random order, picture side down, on the chalkboard or bulletin board at the front of the room.

Presentation: Have the children take turns trying to find two matching pictures. When a pair is found, leave them turned to the picture side and have a child briefly retell the story depicted in the picture (help them as needed). Sing songs to reinforce the messages.

Suggested story summaries and songs:

200 or 201: When it was nearly time for Jesus to be born, Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem to pay taxes. Bethlehem was crowded with people, and the inns were full. Joseph and Mary found a place to stay in a stable. There the baby Jesus was born. Mary wrapped the babe in swaddling clothes and laid Him in a manger. "Away in a Manger," Children's Songbook, p. 42

242: When Jesus was 12 years old, He went with His family to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover. On the way home, Joseph and Mary realized that Jesus was not with their group. They went back to Jerusalem to look for Him. After three days of searching, they found Jesus teaching the wise men in the temple.

208: Jesus came to John the Baptist to be baptized in the Jordan River. John knew that Jesus was without sin, and so he thought Jesus did not need baptism. When Jesus explained that even the Savior must be baptized, John went down into the water and baptized Him. "Baptism," CS, p. 100

214: Jesus fell asleep as He and His disciples were sailing across the Sea of Galilee. A great storm arose. The wind blew and waves covered the ship. The disciples, afraid for their lives, woke Jesus. He stood and told the winds and the sea to be still. The storm stopped, and the sea was calm. "Tell Me the Stories of Jesus," CS, p. 57

213: Jesus saw a man who had been born blind. Jesus spat in the dirt and made clay, then put the clay on the blind man's eyes and sent him to wash in the pool of Siloam. After doing as Jesus said, the man came away from the pool able to see. The man's neighbors were amazed, and he explained to them how Jesus had healed him.

225: Jesus had assembled His Apostles in the Upper Room for the Last Supper. He knew that He was going to die and that He wanted His friends to remember Him, do the things He had taught them, and remember the promises they made when they were baptized, so He gave them the sacrament. "To Think About Jesus," CS, p. 71

227: Jesus and His Apostles went to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus went off by Himself to pray. He knew that the time had come for Him to suffer for the sins of the world. He prayed that He might not have to experience such suffering but told Heavenly Father that He would do the Father's will.

233: After Jesus had died and was placed in the tomb, Mary was weeping because his body was no longer there. As she was in the garden, Mary noticed someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she did not recognize Him until He spoke her name. "Did Jesus Really Live Again," CS, p. 64

Mormon Life says: "I'm trying to be like Jesus/I'm following in His ways/I'm trying to love as he did/In all that I do and say." ("I'm Trying to Be Like Jesus," Children's Songbook, 78)

This sharing time will involve the children in an activity to help them learn how they can serve others.

Preparation: Put the following items in a large duffel bag or pillow case. A can of food, a garden trowel, a tube of toothpaste, a feather duster, a plastic cup or piece of silverware, a package of flower seeds, a small blanket or quilt, and a children's book.

Presentation: Tell the children that you are going to talk about some ways they can serve others. Show them the bag and explain that there are items inside to represent ways they can serve, or help. Invite a child to come pull an item out of the bag. Have them think of a way that item reminds them to help others. Prompt them and expand on what they say as needed. Have all the children act out the service as you talk about it. Suggested ideas follow.

Can of food: Collect and donate canned goods to food pantries or homeless shelters. Fix a meal for a lonely person.

Garden trowel: Do yard work for elderly neighbors. This could include weeding, mowing lawns, shoveling snow, etc.

Toothpaste: Make and donate hygiene kits to the Church's Humanitarian Center or to local homeless centers.

Feather duster: Help mother with jobs around the house such as dusting, vacuuming, making bed, etc.

Cup or silverware: Help setting the table or washing the dishes. Help cook dinner. Help fix treats for others.

Flower seeds: Plant flowers around the church house, a school, or other community building. Take flowers to grandparents, neighbors, or those in a care center.

Blanket: Make fleece blankets or quilts for the Humanitarian Center or local homeless shelter. Help take care of a baby.

Book: Read a story to a younger brother or sister. Donate books to local care centers.

Explain that sometimes service can be a big project and sometimes service can be as simple as a note or kind word to those in our own family. Encourage the children to find ways they can serve others. Bear your testimony that Heavenly Father loves us and wants us to love one another and take care of one another.

Sing songs to reinforce the lesson such as, "When We're Helping," Children's Songbook 198; "Give, Said the Little Stream," CS 236; "Go the Second Mile," CS 167; and "I'm Trying to Be like Jesus," CS 78.

This sharing time will help the children learn about "The Family: A Proclamation to the World."

Preparation: On six separate sheets of paper write the following letters F-A-M-I-L-Y. Gather a bean bag and the following pictures: Young Couple Going to the Temple, Gospel Art Kit 609; Adam and Eve, GAK 101; Christ and Children, GAK 608; Salt Lake Temple, GAK 502; Family Togetherness, GAK 616; The World, GAK 600.

Put the pictures and the letter sheets back to back and place them into sheet protectors. Spread out the sheet protectors on the floor at the front of the room with the picture side facing up.

Presentation: Explain to the children that the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles issued "The Family: A Proclamation to the World." It contains principles that are important to the happiness and well-being of every family. Today they are going to learn about some of the important things the proclamation tells us.

Invite a child to come and toss the bean bag onto one of the pictures. Show the picture and discuss the principle it represents. Have the child post the letter on the board. Repeat with all of the pictures.

1. Young Couple. "Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children."

2. Adam and Eve. "All human beings - male and female - are created in the image of God."

3. Christ and Children. "In the premortal realm, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshiped God as their Eternal Father and accepted His plan . . . to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize his or her divine destiny as an heir of eternal life."

4. Temple. "The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally."

5. Family. "Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other and for their children. . . . Parents have a sacred duty to rear their children in love and righteousness, to provide for their physical and spiritual needs, to teach them to love and serve one another."

6. Earth. "We call upon responsible citizens and officers of government everywhere to promote those measures designed to maintain and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society."

Have the children unscramble the letters on the board and decipher the word FAMILY. Bear your testimony of the importance of families.

Sing songs to reinforce the lesson such as, "I Am a Child of God," Children's Songbook 2; "Families Can Be Together Forever," CS 188; "I Love to See the Temple," CS 95; and "I Lived in Heaven," CS 4.

This sharing time will help you teach children the messages of our prophet, apostles, and leaders.

Preparation:
Create a simple, poster-sized dot-to-dot of a house similar to this sample drawing. Lightly sketch the shape of the house in pencil. Add dots and numbers with a black marker at each corner. Erase the pencil lines. If you wish you can add a few details with the marker, such as a door or some windows.

Obtain a picture of each of the leaders quoted below from the meetinghouse library or print from lds.org. Familiarize yourself with their talks. Post the pictures and the poster at the front of the room.

Presentation:
Tell the children that they are going to learn some important messages the prophet and other leaders have for us. Explain that when we follow the teachings of these leaders we will improve ourselves and strengthen our families. Tell them that as they learn, they will also be able to complete a dot-to-dot picture.

Have a child come up and select one of the pictures. Tell the children the name of the leader in the picture and summarize their message. Discuss the message by asking the children for examples that might illustrate the principle taught. Then, have a child draw the first line on the dot-to-dot. Repeat with another child—another picture, message, and dot-to-dot line until all ten have been discussed. You may have the children occasionally sing a song that reinforces a concept.

1. President Thomas S. Monson (see "Reach Out to Others," Friend, Aug 2009, 2-3). "Our daughter, Ann, turned five shortly after we arrived in Canada [when I was assigned there as mission president]. She saw the missionaries going about their work, and she too wanted to be a missionary. Ann [took] to class a few copies of the Children's Friend [magazine]. She also [took] with her a copy of the Book of Mormon so that she might talk to her teacher, Miss Pepper, about the Church.

Just a few years ago, long years after our return from Toronto, we [received] a note from Miss Pepper which read:

Dear Ann:
I made a commitment that one day I would come to Salt Lake City and see why you talked as you did and why you believed in the manner you believed. Today I had the privilege of going through your visitors' center on Temple Square. Thanks to a five-year-old girl who had an understanding of that which she believed, I now have a better understanding of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

2. Elder Boyd K. Packer (see "Counsel to Young Men," Ensign, May 2009, 49-52). "When I was five years old, I became very ill. It turned out that I had polio. I lay for several weeks on a World War I army cot in our front room beside a coal stove. Afterward, I could not walk. I remember very clearly sliding around on the linoleum floor and pulling myself up on chairs, learning to walk again.

"As I moved into school, I found that my muscles were weak. I was very self-conscious. I determined to compensate in other ways.

"I learned that you should always take care of your body. Take nothing into your body that will harm it, such as we are counseled in the Word of Wisdom: tea, coffee, liquor, tobacco, or anything else that is habit-forming, addictive, or harmful.

"[In] section 89 [of] the Doctrine and Covenants. You will find great promises:

"'All saints who remember to keep and do these sayings . . . shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones; . . . And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.'"

3. Elder Russell M. Nelson (see "Lessons from the Lord's Prayers," Ensign, May 2009, 46-49). "We can use 'right words' - special pronouns - in reference to Deity [when praying]. While worldly manners of daily dress and speech are becoming more casual, we have been asked to protect the formal, proper language of prayer. In our prayers we use the respectful pronouns Thee, Thou, Thy, and Thine instead of You, Your, and Yours. Doing so helps us to be humble. That can also enhance our prayers. Scripture so declares, 'Be thou humble; and the Lord thy God shall lead thee by the hand, and give thee answer to thy prayers.'"

4. Elder Richard G. Scott (see "Temple Worship: The Source of Strength and Power in Times of Need," Ensign, May 2009, 43-45). "Our son, Richard, was born with a heart defect. A few years later a daughter was born. She died after living only a few minutes. . . [Richard's] surgery was performed just six weeks after the birth and death of our baby daughter. . . . [After the surgery] the doctor came in and told us, 'Your son has died.' I embraced my wife and said to her, 'We do not need to worry, because our children were born in the covenant. We have the assurance that we will have them with us in the future. Now we have a reason to live extremely well. We have a son and a daughter who have qualified to go to the celestial kingdom because they died before the age of eight.' That knowledge has given us great comfort. We rejoice in the knowledge that all seven of our children are sealed to us for time and all eternity."

5. President Dieter F. Uchtdorf (see "The First Vision," Friend, Jun 2008, 2-3). "The chapel in Zwickau [Germany] had an old air-driven organ. Every Sunday a young man was assigned to push up and down the sturdy lever operating the bellows to make the organ work. I sometimes had the great privilege to assist in this important task.

While the congregation sang, I pumped with all my strength so the organ would not run out of wind. The bellows operator sat in a seat that offered a great view of a stained-glass window that portrayed the First Vision, with Joseph Smith kneeling in the Sacred Grove, looking up toward heaven and into a pillar of light.

"I often looked at this depiction of a most sacred moment in world history. I felt a special spirit while looking at the beautiful scene in this window. By the universal power of the Holy Ghost, I felt in my heart and in my mind that it was true, that Joseph Smith saw God and Jesus Christ and heard Their voices.

"The Spirit of God comforted my soul at this young age with an assurance of the reality of this sacred moment. I believed Joseph Smith's testimony of that glorious experience in the Sacred Grove then, and I know it now. God has spoken to mankind again!"

6. Sister Margaret S. Lifferth (see "Respect and Reverence," Ensign, May 2009, 11-13). "Ask yourself these questions: Am I an example of respect in my home by the way I treat those I love the most? [How do I act] during a sports event? Do I show respect for the property of others as well as take care of my own? How do I respond to others with whom I disagree?

"Respect for others and reverence for God are close cousins. Primary children learn this concept as they sing this verse from a Primary song:
Rev'rence is more than just quietly sitting: It's thinking of Father above, A feeling I get when I think of his blessings. I'm rev'rent, for rev'rence is love. (Children's Songbook, p. 31)

"I know that I have a loving Heavenly Father and that His Son, Jesus Christ, is my Savior. Our increased reverence will reflect our deepest love for Them."

7. Elder Robert D. Hales (see "Becoming Provident Providers Temporally and Spiritually," Ensign, May 2009, 7-10). "When we were newly married and had very little money, I saw a beautiful dress in a store window and suggested to my wife that if she liked it, we would buy it. Mary went into the dressing room of the store. After a moment the salesclerk came out and returned the dress to its place in the store window. As we left the store, I asked, 'What happened?' She replied, 'It was a beautiful dress, but we can't afford it!'

"We all need to learn to say to one another, 'We can't afford it, even though we want it!' With all the love in me and with the Savior's love through me, I invite you to come unto Him and hear His words: 'Wherefore, do not spend money for that which is of no worth, nor your labor for that which cannot satisfy. Hearken diligently unto me, and remember the words which I have spoken; and come unto the Holy One of Israel, and feast upon that which perisheth not, neither can be corrupted (2 Nephi 9:51).'"

8. President Henry B. Eyring (see "Adversity," Ensign, May 2009, 23-27). "My friend served as our bishop [many years ago]. [As he aged] he was in constant pain. His health began a slow decline. Yet every time I visited him to give him comfort, he turned the tables; I always was the one comforted. His back and legs forced him to use a cane to walk. Yet there he was in church, always sitting near the door, where he could greet those arriving early, with a smile.

"I will never forget the feeling of wonder and admiration which came over me when I opened the back door at home and saw him coming up our driveway. It was the day we put out our garbage cans to be picked up by city workers. I had put the can out in the morning. But there he was dragging my garbage can up the hill with one hand while he balanced himself with a cane in his other hand. He was giving me the help he thought I needed when he needed it far more than I did. And he was helping with a smile and without being asked."

9. Elder Quentin L. Cook (see "Our Father's Plan - Big Enough for All His Children," Ensign, May 2009, 34-38). "In 1863 Charles Dickens, the English novelist, went on board the passenger ship Amazon, which was bound for New York. His purpose was to report on the Latter-day Saint converts who were emigrating to build up the Church in the American West. There had been thousands of converts who had already emigrated, and much had been written, particularly in the British media, about them and their beliefs. Most of what was written was [unkind].

"'I went on board their ship,' wrote Dickens, 'to bear testimony against them if they deserved it, as I fully believed they would; to my great astonishment they did not deserve it.'

"[Despite] our doctrinal differences with other faiths, our attitude toward other churches has been to refrain from criticism. They do much good. They bless mankind. Many help their members learn of the Savior and His teachings.

"Our leaders have consistently counseled us 'to live with respect and appreciation for those not of our faith. There is so great a need for civility and mutual respect among those of differing beliefs and philosophies.'"

10. Dallin H. Oaks (see "Sacrament Meeting and the Sacrament," Ensign, Nov 2008, 17-20). "The ordinance of the sacrament makes the sacrament meeting the most sacred and important meeting in the Church. It is the only Sabbath meeting the entire family can attend together.

"The modern revelation directing us to partake of the sacrament each week, tells us how we should prepare. Our manner of dress indicates the degree to which we understand and honor the ordinance in which we will participate.

"During sacrament meeting - and especially during the sacrament service - we should concentrate on worship and refrain from all other activities, especially from behavior that could interfere with the worship of others. Sacrament meeting is not a time for reading books or magazines. When we partake of the sacrament, we make a sacred covenant that we will always remember the Savior. How sad to see persons obviously violating that covenant in the very meeting where they are making it.

"The music of sacrament meeting is a vital part of our worship. How wonderful when every person in attendance joins in the worship of singing - especially in the hymn that helps us prepare to partake of the sacrament."

After all the messages have been presented, you will have finished the picture of the house. Bear testimony that as we follow the counsel of our leaders, we'll help build strong homes and families.

This sharing time will engage the children in an activity geared to increase their understanding of the Lord's temples.

Preparation: Obtain a picture of a temple, ten colored sheets of paper, and a picture of a boy and girl. Post the temple picture on the board at the front of the room. Place the colored sheets under the temple picture to make a "path" leading up to the temple. Place the boy and girl pictures on the bottom sheet of paper.

Print the activity ideas below (without the answers) and cut them into separate slips. Place the slips in a box or basket. Familiarize yourself with the songs, questions, and activities on the slips.

Presentation: Point out the temple picture at the front of the room. Tell the children that you are going to play a game to help the boy and girl get to the temple.

Have a child come up and draw a slip of paper from the basket. Have the child follow the directions on the paper (they can ask their class members for help if they want). After they complete the activity the child can move the boy and girl up to the next square. Further discuss the information from that activity as appropriate. Repeat with another child and another slip until all ten activities have been completed.

Activity slips for the basket:
1. Have all the children sing "I Love to See the Temple," Children's Songbook, 95.

2. Name three ordinances that are performed in the temple. (Marriage, Endowment, Sealing, Washing, Anointing, Baptism, Confirmation, Ordination.)

3. Tell which temple you'd like to be married in and why.

4. Unscramble the following words (make wordstrips of the scrambled words). TACENNSOV (Covenants), OCEISNANRD (Ordinances).

5. Have all the children sing, "Families Can Be Together Forever," Children's Songbook, 188.

6. Fill in the missing vowels to decode the following statement (make a wordstrip of the statement). TH_ T_MPL_ IS _ H_ _SE OF G_D. (The temple is a house of God.)

7. Look at a picture of a baptismal font in a temple. (Gospel Art Kit, picture 504) What is under the font? (Twelve Oxen.) What do they represent? (The Twelve Tribes of Israel.)

8. Have all the children sing, "Truth from Elijah," Children's Songbook, 90.

9. Name three things you need to do to be worthy of a temple recommend. (Have a testimony of Jesus Christ, pay tithing, attend church meetings, be honest, live the Word of Wisdom, live the law of chastity, support church leaders, treat family members with kindness.)

10. Unscramble the following words (make wordstrips of the scrambled words). MFYILA RYTHIOS (Family History), RVFEEOR (Forever).

After all the activities have been completed congratulate the children on making it to the temple. Explain that now is the time for the children to prepare to go to the temple when they are older. Challenge them to make going to the temple a goal.

Bear testimony that temples are holy places and through temple ordinances our families can be united forever.

Preparation: Obtain a tool box and eight tools, such as: a hammer, a saw, a pair of pliers, a wrench, a screwdriver, a tape measure, a file, and a clamp. Attach a note to each tool with one of these phrases on it: Family Meal Time, Working Together, Family Prayer, Family Home Evening, Being Kind, Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy, Learning About Ancestors, and Family Scripture Study.

Presentation: Explain to the children that tools help us build things. Today they are going to learn about tools that will help them build a strong family. Show them the tool box and tell them they will find some tools inside. Each tool has a clue on it that will help them strengthen their family.

Ask a child to come pick a tool from the box. Have them read the note out loud (younger children could repeat it after you). Ask the children how this phrase can be a tool to help build their family. Have the children share their ideas and examples. Explain that you can learn more about this tool from the scriptures and our leaders. Read the scripture or quote or sing the song that goes with that concept. Repeat with each tool.

Family Meal Time. Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said, "The time a family spends together eating meals at home [is] the strongest predictor of children's [success]. Family mealtimes have also been shown to be a strong bulwark against children's smoking, drinking, or using drugs." (Dallin H. Oaks, "Good, Better, Best," Ensign, Nov 2007, 104-8)

Working Together. "When We're Helping, We're Happy," Children's Songbook, p. 198.

Family Prayer. Doctrine and Covenants 68:28. "And they shall also teach their children to pray, and to walk uprightly before the Lord."

Family Home Evening. President Gordon B. Hinckley said, "This program [of Family Home Evening] was begun back in 1915, when President Joseph F. Smith urged the Latter-day Saints to set aside one evening a week devoted specifically to the family. It was to be a time of teaching, of reading the scriptures, of cultivating talents, of discussing family matters. In the increasingly frantic rush of our lives it is so important that fathers and mothers sit down with their children, pray together, instruct them in the ways of the Lord, consider their family problems, and let the children express their talents. I am satisfied that this program came under the revelations of the Lord in response to a need among the families of the Church. If there was a need 87 years ago, that need is certainly much greater today." (Gordon B. Hinckley, "To Men of the Priesthood," Ensign, Nov 2002, 56)

"The Family," Children's Songbook, p. 194.

Being Kind. "Kindness Begins With Me," Children's Songbook, p. 145.

Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy. Mosiah 13:16. "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy."

Learning About Ancestors. President Thomas S. Monson said, "I admonish all families: search out your heritage. It is important to know, as far as possible, those who came before us. We discover something about ourselves when we learn about our ancestors." (Thomas S. Monson, "Constant Truths for Changing Times," Ensign, May 2005, 19)

Family Scripture Study. Elder L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said, "I promise you that daily family prayer and scripture study will build within the walls of your home a security and bonding that will enrich your lives and prepare your families to meet the challenges of today and the eternities to come." (L. Tom Perry, "Back to Gospel Basics," Ensign, May 1993, 90)

Remind the children that the physical tools can build things, but the tools they've learned about today can build strong families. Bear your testimony of how these tools have blessed you and your family. Challenge the children to seek these things in their own lives, with their families now and in the future when they come parents.

This sharing time will engage the children in a game to help them learn principles that will strengthen their families.

Preparation: Obtain a small rock, a package of seeds, a bar of soap, and a coin. Familiarize yourself with the scriptures in the lesson below.

Presentation: Tell the children that they are going to learn about some principles of the gospel that will help strengthen them and their family. Explain that after they learn about each principle, they will play a game.

Faith. Tell the children that the Book of Mormon prophet Alma taught that faith is like a seed (see Alma 32:26-32). When we plant a seed, then take care of it and water it, it will grow. When we want to know the truth we "plant" the seed of faith. Then we take care of it by obeying the commandments and seeking the Lord's help. Our faith will grow and we will learn truth.

Ask the children what seek means (remind them of the game "hide and seek" if they need help). Tell them that they have to seek after faith. Show them the package of seeds. Explain that they are going to play a game of hide and seek. Ask one child to leave the room. Ask another child to hide the seeds somewhere in the room. Have the first child return and look for the seeds. Have the other children sing "Faith" (Children's Songbook, p. 96) as he looks. Sing louder when he gets closer and softer when he gets farther away. Once the child finds the seed packet, ask the children how faith can strengthen them or their family.

Prayer. Tell the story of Daniel in the lion's den (see Daniel 6:1-23). Reiterate that Daniel knew it was important to pray, even when others told him he shouldn't do it.

Show the children the small rock. Tell them that some people have a prayer rock they keep on their pillow to remind them to say their prayers every night. Play the hide and seek game again using the rock as the hidden object. Sing "Seek the Lord Early" (Children's Songbook, p. 108) as the child seeks the rock. Once the child finds it, ask the children how prayer can strengthen them or their family.

Repentance. Tell the story of Aaron teaching the Lamanite king. Once the King was converted to the church he was willing to "give away all his sins" to know God (see Alma 22:1-11, 15-18). Help the children understand that giving away your sins means repenting, or not sinning anymore.

Show the children the bar of soap. Explain that repenting cleans our spirit from sin just like soap cleans our bodies from dirt. Play the hide and seek game again using the soap as the hidden object. Sing "I Am a Child of God" (Children's Songbook, p. 1) as the child looks for the soap. Once the child finds it, ask the children how repentance can strengthen them or their family.

Forgiveness. Tell the parable of the unmerciful servant (see Matthew 18:23-35). Explain that God expects us to forgive others.

Show the children the coin. Explain to them that the talents and pence in the story are kinds of money. Play the hide and seek game again using the coin as the hidden object. Sing "How Firm a Foundation" (Hymns, no. 85) as the child seeks the coin. Once the coin has been found, ask the children how forgiving others can strengthen them or their family.

Bear your testimony of these principles of the gospel. Tell the children how they have blessed you and your family. Challenge them to seek these things in their own lives.

This sharing time will help children learn more about baptism.

Preparation: Obtain a flannel board and cutout pictures of a mother, a father, and two sisters from Primary Visual Aids Cutouts, Set 7-Pioneers and the Restoration; two missionaries from Primary Visual Aids Cutouts, Set 2-People; and a winter scene from Primary Visual Aids Cutouts, Set 3-Nature. Put tape or flannel on the back of each picture.

Make enough copies of the baptism coloring page on page 111 of the Nursery Manual for each Junior Primary child. Write one letter on seven separate sheets of paper to spell B-A-P-T-I-S-M. Post the papers at the front of the room.

Presentation: Using the picture cutouts and the flannel board, tell the following true story:

As a young girl, Christina and her family lived in Uddarp, Sweden. Her father was a mason who built houses, fences, and fireplaces out of stone. There was a forest nearby where her father and older brother, Lars, would hunt for meat for the family. Christina and her mother grew vegetables in their yard. Not far from Christina's home was a large grist mill where grain was ground into flour so they could make bread.

In 1858, when Christina was ten years old, the wife of the miller asked Christina to come stay with them and tend her baby. Even though Christina was young, she was very good with babies and the woman liked her. Christina went to live with the miller's family, but was able to visit her own family often.

Christina liked living at the mill. The townspeople would gather there, and other people would come from many miles away to have their wheat ground. It was a place where everyone enjoyed talking to one another and sharing news. Christina liked sitting and listening to all the things the grownups had to say.

One day Mormon missionaries came to Uddarp and began teaching the restored gospel. People were afraid of this new religion from America. Most of the townspeople did not like the missionaries and would not listen. Christina even heard many people say the missionaries were evil. She believed all the rumors that she heard.

Meanwhile, Christina's family invited the missionaries into their home. The elders taught them about Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon. They soon came to know that the missionaries were teaching the truth.

After Christina had lived with the family who ran the mill for three years, they moved away. Christina did not want to return home because her family had been listening to the missionaries and had been baptized. She went to work for another lady in the neighborhood whose husband was the blacksmith.

After a few months, her family convinced her to come back home. When the missionaries came to visit, Christina would refuse to listen to them. She did not want to sing or pray with them as her family did. Her parents were very worried about her, but the missionaries told them she was old enough to make this important decision for herself.

One day Christina picked up the Book of Mormon and began looking though the pages. Her sister, Anna, teased her and said, "Be careful, it might burn you." Christina didn't pay much attention to her sister. But as she read, she became more and more interested. She soon felt the book was true.

In December of 1862, two days after Christina's 14th birthday, the missionaries came to her parents' home. Elder Josephson told Christina, "I had a dream last night that I'd caught a fish." He teased her about it and said, "It couldn't possibly be this little girl?" Christina did not laugh at his joke. She was thinking very hard about what Heavenly Father wanted her to do. While her family talked to the elders, Christina went into another room and knelt down and prayed. She asked to know what she should do. Her prayer was answered, and the Holy Ghost made her feel as if she had been "lifted up." She returned to her mother and whispered that she wanted to be baptized. Her family was very pleased.

The next day they walked six miles to the sea where they broke a hole in the ice and Christina was baptized. She felt very happy. She was glad she had found out for herself that the Church is true. ("To Know for Herself," by Shauna Gibby. A true story about Christina Peterson Jeppson.)

Bear testimony of your own decision to be baptized. Help the children understand that Heavenly Father wants them to be baptized and He wants them to know for themselves it is the right thing to do.
Have the younger children color the baptism picture.

Point out the letters at the front of the room to the older children. Explain that baptism is a wonderful blessing. As you point to each letter ask the children to think of other blessings that start with that letter. Have them share their ideas.

Sing baptism songs such as, "Baptism," Children's Songbook 100; "When I Am Baptized," CS 103; "When Jesus Christ Was Baptized," CS 102; and "I Want to Be Baptized," Friend, July 2005, 45.

This sharing time will help children understand that by following Jesus they can return to live with Heavenly Father.

Preparation: Obtain a ball of yarn and the pictures of Jesus Christ mentioned in the presentation. Before sharing time, post the pictures around the room. Tie one end of the yarn to a chair near the back of the room.

Presentation: Ask the children to look around the room and raise their hand if they can see a picture of Christ. Choose a child. Have them take the ball of yarn and string a line from the chair to the picture they found. Place a chair near the picture and tie the yarn to it. Discuss what Jesus is doing in the picture and how the children can follow His example. Sing a song that reinforces the principle, if desired.

Choose additional children and repeat choosing pictures, stringing yarn, discussing principles, and singing until all the pictures have been used.

Jesus Washing the Apostles Feet (Gospel Art Kit #226 or Gospel Art Book #55)

Jesus served his Apostles by washing their feet. (See John 13:14-15.) During Christ's time the people's feet got very dirty from walking on dirt roads, so washing their feet was a kind service. We don't have to wash feet to give service, we can serve in other ways. Children can do things like setting the table, sharing a toy with a younger child, helping set up chairs for Pack Meeting, vacuuming the car, feeding their pets, or many other things.

Song: "I'm Trying to Be like Jesus," Children's Songbook 78.

Boy Jesus in the Temple (Gospel Art Kit #205 or Gospel Art Book #34)

When Jesus was twelve years old he went to the temple and sat "in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers." (See Luke 2:46-47.) Jesus listened and learned from the wise men of the Church. We can go to Primary and Sacrament Meeting and listen and learn.

Jesus' Baptism (Gospel Art Kit #208 or Gospel Art Book #35)

Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist to "fulfill all righteousness." (See Matthew 3:15.) He knew it was a commandment to be baptized, so even though He had no sins, He obeyed this commandment. We can follow Jesus' example by being baptized when we are eight-years-old.

Song: "Baptism," Children's Songbook 100.

Jesus Praying (as a child: Gospel Art Book #33; as an adult: Gospel Art Kit #227 or Gospel Art Book #56)

Jesus taught the people that they should pray to Heavenly Father. He showed them how to do it. (See Matthew 6:5-13.) We should remember to pray to Heavenly Father every day.

Jesus Reading the Scriptures (as an adult: Cover of Teaching, No Greater Call or Ensign, Jul 2002, p. 46; as a child: Ensign, Dec. 2005, p. 44.)

Jesus taught the people that they should search the scriptures because they testify of Him. (See John 5:39.) Jesus went to the synagogue (the church building) and read to the people from the scriptures. (See Like 4:16-17, 20-21.) We should read our scriptures to learn more about Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father.

Song: "Search, Ponder, and Pray," Children's Songbook 109.

Jesus Teaching (Gospel Art Kit #212 or Gospel Art Book #39)

On many, many occasions Jesus taught the gospel to those around Him. (For example, see Matthew 5.) He bore testimony of the truth. We should be good missionaries and teach others the gospel. We should bear our testimonies.

Song: "I Want to Be a Missionary Now," Children's Songbook 168.

Have some of the children start at the first chair, and follow the yarn from picture to picture. Reinforce the idea that we can FOLLOW Jesus Christ's example. Bear your testimony that Jesus shows us the way to return and live with our Heavenly Father.

This sharing time will teach the children about different family members in the scriptures and Church History.

_Preparation:_ Familiarize yourself with the people in this sharing time. If possible, obtain pictures of each of them (Lucy Mack Smith, Mary [the mother of Jesus], Lehi, Alma, Miriam, Mary and Martha, the Brother of Jared, and President Gordon B. Hinckley.)

_Presentation:_ Tell the children that you are thinking of a person in the scriptures or in the history of our church. You are going to give them some clues. When they think they know who it is, they should quietly raise their hand (do not shout out the answer). Continue to give all the clues, then call on someone with their hand up to guess who it is. If they are not correct, ask for other answers. If none of the children know who it is, tell them the answer. If you have a picture, show it to the children.

_Option:_ Cover the picture with a sheet of paper cut into six pieces. Take one piece off with each clue until the picture is fully revealed.

5. They would watch the stars, and learned that the North Star never changed. He wanted to pattern his life after the North Star and always be someone his family and others could depend on.

6. He became a prophet and the President of the Church.

Explain that we should love and take care of our families just as these people did. Bear your testimony of the importance of your family.

Sing songs to reinforce the lesson such as, "My Eternal Family," _2009 Outline for Sharing Time_, 10-11; "A Happy Family," _Children's Songbook_ 198; "Families Can Be Together Forever," _CS_ 188; and "Love is Spoken Here," _CS_ 190.

This sharing time will involve the children in an activity to help them learn about the beautiful world around them.

_Preparation:_ On ten index cards write a sense word: SMELL, TASTE, TOUCH, HEAR, and SEE (two cards of each word). Place them face down on a table at the front of the room. Post the "sight" pictures somewhere in the room. Gather the other items needed for the sensory activities below.

Be familiar with the scripture Doctrine and Covenants 59:18-20:

Yea, all things which come of the earth, in the season thereof, are made for the benefit and the use of man, both to please the *eye* and to gladden the *heart*;

Yea, for *food* and for *raiment*, for *taste* and for *smell*, to *strengthen the body* and to enliven the soul.
And it pleaseth God that he hath given all these things unto man.

_Presentation:_ Slowly read the scripture D&C 59:18-20. As you read, touch your eye, put your hand on your heart, mime eating, act out putting on clothes, point to your mouth and nose, and make a strong muscle with your arm (see bolded words).

Tell the children that they are going to discover some of the things God created for them by using their senses. Ask the children to name the senses (help them remember all five senses).

Point out the cards on the front table. Have a child come pick a card. Have them complete one of the sensory activities that matches the word they picked. Repeat until all the cards are used or time is up.

_Smell:_ Blindfold the child and have them sniff as you hold something under their nose. Let them guess what it is. (Suggestions: orange, flower, or peanut butter.)

_Taste:_ Blindfold the child and have them open their mouth and taste the item you give them. Let them guess what it is. (Suggestions: apple slice, popcorn, or chocolate.) You may wish to give each child a small portion of one of the items to taste at the end of the lesson.

_Touch:_ Blindfold the child and have them feel an item that you place in their hands. Let them guess what it is. (Suggestions: cotton ball, pinecone, rock, or feather.)

_Hear:_ Blindfold the child. Show the other children a picture of an animal and have them imitate the sound that animal makes. Let the blindfolded child guess what animal it is. (Suggestions: bird, cow, cat, or sheep.)

_Sight:_ Describe something to the child and let them find a picture of it somewhere in the room. (Suggestions: sun, flowers, fish, or river.)

Bear your testimony that Heavenly Father loves us and created the world with many wonderful things in it for our families to use and enjoy.
