Church representative to address affinity fraud

A Church representative will speak on 15 February at the Fraud College, a Utah-based organization that promotes fraud awareness and education. Michael Otterson, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' (Mormon) Public Affairs managing director, will address the importance of making all people, including members of religious organizations, aware of the dangers of affinity fraud. While senior Church leaders have repeatedly warned against fraud, this is the first time a Church representative has spoken at the Fraud College.

Historically, clerks and other Church leaders have been required to be at their respective meetinghouse to perform administrative work because the Member and Leader Services (MLS) software could only be accessed from the clerk’s PC located at the meetinghouse. As a result, many clerks and leaders complete their administrative work on Sunday to avoid travelling to the meetinghouse during the week. Simple reports like the New Member Report can only be viewed or printed at the meetinghouse.

Mormon Life says: What a sad day for both the sanctity of marriage and our country's judicial system. Shortly after the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued its ruling that California's Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued a response.

"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints regrets today's decision," said LDS Church spokesman Michael Purdy. "California voters have twice determined in a general election that marriage should be recognized as only between a man and a woman. We have always had that view. Courts should not alter that definition, especially when the people of California have spoken so clearly on the subject. ...

Earlier this year, a family historian named Carol was trying to piece together the Ohio branches of her family tree. “They were shattered by death, marriage, remarriage, name changes, and lack of records,” she said. “Using the records indexed through FamilySearch [an organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints], I was able to…solve an important mystery. It was such a satisfying moment.”

Today that satisfaction is experienced over and over by millions of people who are able to connect with their ancestors thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers known as FamilySearch indexers.

Mormon Life says: I hope this was just a misunderstanding and no real malice was intended. A Minerva Teichert painting known as "The Law on the Plates of Brass" is at the heart of a legal dispute pitting a downtown art gallery against the painting's one-time owner, and the LDS Church.

Thomas Alder, owner of Williams Fine Art Gallery, contends two unnamed representatives from the Church History Museum showed up with paperwork to "borrow" the painting from his business and never returned it. Instead, his lawsuit alleges the painting's owner breached their consignment contract and sold the painting to a member of the museum's acquisition committee without Alder's knowledge.

Seminary 100th anniversary commemorated in worldwide broadcast

President Boyd K. Packer, President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, will speak at a broadcast on the 100-year anniversary of the Church’s seminary program, where high school age students learn about the Holy Scriptures.

The event will be held in Salt Lake City at the Conference Center 22 January 2012 at 6:00 p.m. mountain standard time and broadcast to Church meetinghouses worldwide. A rebroadcast is scheduled on 29 January. The fireside will also be streamed live on seminary.lds.org.

Research under way on original Tabernacle in Provo

As the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prepares to build a temple out of the burnt shell of the Provo Tabernacle efforts are underway to preserve Provo history.

Perhaps few people realize a smaller structure was built in 1867, just north of where the Provo Tabernacle stands today. The only physical reminder of the edifice is a monument erected in 1959 by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers.
